If all the applications I use would occupy proportionally as much space as Photos, I would need about a 10 Exabyte HDD.

So yes, this is a big problem for me, no matter how much free space I have on my disks.

Speaking of Tools to list disk usage visually.

On Linux, use QDirStat or when on Windows use WinDirStat. Both tools are based on the original open-source tool called KDirStat. Very good stuff.

Microsoft apps are to temporarily do your job until you install a far better program. For example Notepad or Wordpad to write a simple document until you install Microsoft Office, Microsoft Paint until you install something with more features, Movies & TV until you install VLC or MPC-HC etc.

I only have one UWP app, and only out of curiosity, and, I'm about to uninstall it as well!!!

There are games on Windows Store I like to play, so I use mostly for these. For apps I have better desktop alternatives.

I think what bothers me worse than lame Store apps is, how MS introduces a lame new feature to a lame Store app with all the fanfare of a royal wedding, as if they just invented the wheel, while certified 3rd party devs have had far superior functionality for decades! 🤷‍♂️

I have been using Irfanview for ages.

I clicked on the Photos app to see what it is all about. The first screen
is asking me to sign up One drive. I do not use One drive.

I presume this photo app is marketing one drive by Microsoft

Even though I complain about MS store Apps like Photos being HUGE in size for what it does...does not mean I don't use it. Most Apps that come by default in a fresh Windows 11 install I use. They are all well integrated into the system. Saves me from downloading extra stuff just to do simple tasks like adding a few numbers (Calculator), watching a video clip (Video Player), edit a screenshot (Paint), read a text document or unencoded log file (Notepad) or view a few images (Photos).

All useful to me.

Yeah, I've never found that tool useful at all. More like an annoyance. For me it doesn't do anything useful at all. It's only in the way for me. I've tried it a few times, but never found any use of it.

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.

Yeah but a lot of what you mention were around long before the Microsoft Store was around. Things like Paint, Calculator, Video Player, Notepad were already built-in into Windows 98, Windows 2000, XP, Vista, etc... -> So I don't count those. Even I use some of them.

I'm talking about the garbage that's come around since the Store opened. Stuff made more complicated than it needs to be. Stuff that I don't want as a default yet MS insists that we do. If some people wanna use it, then great. But that doesn't mean others should have to. I kinda like choice, myself. ;-)

If app has 0 bytes it's not installed. Tho, not a core system component - you're even allowed to uninstall it from Installed apps (the default way - no scripts and CMD needed - the norm since latest Windows builds :).

Since Windows 8.0 they try to make Windows Apps look more like mobile apps, hence the simple two-color flat interface vs the nicer multicolor interface of the respective Windows 7 applications (calculator, Windows Media Player, Windows Photo Viewer). It is even more annoying when your default applications are reset to Windows default with upgrading from one version of Windows to the next and you have to change them again. Thankfully I don't use Photos, so its size remains normal. You must have installed many addons to support more weird image formats and that could explain the increase in size. But again, from 22MB to 500MB+ something is very suspicious. Scan for malware ASAP.
