Originally Windows 11

Hey people,

So I got bored one day and had a bright idea. Lets take off Windows 11 from a Windows machine and turn the computer into a Linux based machine. Well the bulb shattered and I can't find one that fits the socket. Which means i cant get it back to Windows. (I am still ok with Linux but turns out the family isn't ) I backed it up but that is no good before i did all this. I burned an iso of Winows both Windows 10 and Windows 11, and it doesn't start. Tells me that I am missing a driver to run Windows. This was 2 weeks ago. I put Windows in a Virtual Box so my wife could use the Turbo Tax software.

Yesterday i went to try again but now it's telling me to insert windows disk (which is a usb) error code 0xc000014c. Now the mbr is missing. I reburned my isos. Used Different usb drives. Used different USB ports. Hiren's Rescue CD will not load either. The computer itself recognizes the USB's obviously. Can anyone possibly tell me what I doing wrong? Or how to fix it? it's an HP 255 g10

Have you used the MCT from Microsoft?

Yup. Can't use the Linux machine to use it because its an .exe file and the virtual box won't finish it. Not sure why

Are you saying the machine came with Window 11? If so, on another Windows machine download the official iso HERE

Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices​

Use Rufus to create installation media. You can use Rufus portable and don't have to install it. Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

Open your devices bios settings. Change your disk mode from RAID to AHCI (depending on your device you should find it under "Advanced," "Storage," or "Onboard Devices" menu. It might show VMD or IRST rather than RAID) Save changes This eliminates the need to install storage controller drivers during the install for you drives to be seen. AT this point your current version of Linux will no longer boot.

Disconnect all other drives leaving only system drive during install.

Insert your usb. As soon as you see splash screen hit the keyboard key that accesses your boot menu. Each brand is different. Here's a few of most common brands.

• Acer: Del or F2
• Asus: F9
• Dell: F12
• HP: Esc or F10
• Lenovo: F1 or F2 or FN+F12

Select your usb device from the list of boot options.

Be sure at step 10 that you delete all partitions so drive is 100% unalloated space and install windows on unallocated space.

Download Windows 11

I did this, first took out the C: (SSD) that contained Windows. Inserted a new SSD and installed Linux on it. Now I can just switch SSD's for either Windows 11 or linux. I also kept a data drive separate for each system. I don't even take a chance on dual boot options. YMMV

insert the Windows USB install stick in a USB port then

please go into your BIOS and make sure RAID is not enabled
and ensure the system is set to UEFI boot

save settings and exit/restart
the system should then boot from the Windows install USB

see if Windows starts the install now

If using the official Microsoft routes above still don't work, HP computers are notorious for not working on Microsoft ISOs and often need drivers pre-loaded into the ISO for everything to work.
