Delete the ISO image you have and re-download the ISO image from the link in post #1.

Then follow the directions exactly....

1. Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT.
2. Open the PSP9 folder, and open the Paint Shop Pro 9 folder.
3. Right click: Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9.msi ...and choose: Run as Administrator, to install Paint Shop Pro 9.
4. Open the PSP9 folder, and open the Animation Shop folder.
5. Right click: Jasc Animation Shop 3.msi ...and choose: Run as Administrator, to install Animation Shop 3.


Many have downloaded and used these PSP versions. They work.
I myself have tested them all.

I get the same error message trying to install PSP 7.04 except that it is Data.cab file that is missing.

You need to MOUNT the PSP 9 ISO image.
You will see it in File Explorer. Then you can follow the directions above.

I'm assuming that data1.cab is a part of the ISO image, which is why I suggested re-downloading the ISO image.


Wait... I'll add to the directions...

a. Download the ISO image, from the link in post #1. Make sure you downloaded the ISO image.
b. Save the ISO image to your desktop.

1. Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT.
2. Open the PSP9 folder, and open the Paint Shop Pro 9 folder.

I just downloaded it again. I mounted the ISO. Here is a screen shot...
The file in the RED box is the one you use to install PSP 9... you need to right click it and Run as administrator.

PSP 7.04 is better by the way. ^^

In PSP 9, they tried to add everything and the kitchen sink, which of course, messed it up. :-)

I've just allowed Win11 to update to winver 25H2 (build 26200.7623) - and now PSP7 is not working.

Double-clicking on a .jpg file in explorer opens up PSP7 but the image does not appear. It's just a blank PSP7 window.

Anyone had this happen?? :(

I haven't.

Maybe it's a bad .jpg? Do all .jpg's act that way?
If so, maybe check your file associations.
I associated everything except .gif files with PSP7

You could also try right clicking the .jpg file and choose: Open with ...and pick PSP7

I have PSP 9.0 and never registered it. The reg screen on mine has an option to skip registration. I don't get any nag screens either

Using FileTypesMan, I looked for .jpg files.

The 'Open - Command Line' was set as:

- "C:\Program Files (x86)\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 7\psp.exe" /dde

I changed it to:

- "C:\Program Files (x86)\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 7\psp.exe" "%1"


Et voila. Back to normal.

I'm having trouble finding any of my machines still on the Patch Tuesday 26200.7623 update. There have been three CU's since then, two Out of Band updates (.7627 & .7628) and the 26200.7705 Preview update.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Just installed PSP 9.01. Unlike Photoshop, which I just recently nuked, I can use my Canon MP990 scanner natively with the twain driver with its full capabilities, hardware resolution of 1200 DPI.

Yes, it can. You may have noticed that at Christmas my avatar puts on a festive hat and snow is falling. This is an animated .gif created with Animation Shop 3. Animated avatars are no longer supported on this site, but over on Ten Forums they still work....

Animation Shop is a stand-alone application, included in the PSP ISO. You can tell the custom install to install just Animation Shop.

However, On its own it has no ability to create or edit the images. It relies on you having another image editing program for that. You'd create a series of frames, save as files, then insert each one into your animation.

Animation Shop is integrated with PSP. It expects to have PSP available to export a frame to it for editing, from where it would be imported back into Animation Shop when done. All options relating to PSP would be greyed out if PSP is missing.

For the moving background in your example, or the foreground snow in my avatar, you'd need an image editor that supports layers and transparency, as PSP does. You'd put the static image in one layer and the one to be moved in another. The layer on top would need transparency where you want the other layer to show through. Then move one layer relative to the other to create each successive frame. In my avatar the snow flakes are the top layer, with everything apart from the snow being set as transparent.

Animation Shop is a stand-alone application, included in the PSP ISO. You can tell the custom install to install just Animation Shop.

However, On its own it has no ability to create or edit the images. It relies on you having another image editing program for that. You'd create a series of frames, save as files, then insert each one into your animation.

Animation Shop is integrated with PSP. It expects to have PSP available to export a frame to it for editing, from where it would be imported back into Animation Shop when done. All options relating to PSP would be greyed out if PSP is missing.

For the moving background in your example, or the foreground snow in my avatar, you'd need an image editor that supports layers and transparency, as PSP does. You'd put the static image in one layer and the one to be moved in another. The layer on top would need transparency where you want the other layer to show through. Then move one layer relative to the other to create each successive frame. In my avatar the snow flakes are the top layer, with everything apart from the snow being set as transparent.

Thank you so much for the answers and the quick tutorial! This should do exactly what what I need compared to gimp (which is a disaster when it comes to UX imo). I usually create and export all my individual gif frames in paint.net, but if this supports layers like you said, it should be much easier!

IMO too. Gimp is powerful, I've tried it. But it was designed by Unix Gurus for Unix Gurus, and has an uncompromising 'Unix-style' interface :D

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.
