Solved PC doesn’t boot from C drive

Can anyone explain why my PC is giving this screen on boot?
The Boot options are shown below.
After going to boot options and selecting Save and Restart, it boots normally once, then gives the error screen every boot after this

I have a MSI Mobo too.
My settings are as such, that the first boot is for UEFI Hard disk, in your scheme that is #11!
Your settings are as such that the system tries to boot from your ST2000 HDD, that does not have a boot system.
But I don't know if that will make the difference.

BTW: Your Systems specs (My Computer) tell you'r having an ASUS Mobo, but your boot screen tells it is a MSI mobo. What is it?

Hi Kees, Thanks for the reply - you inspired me to check my boot options. Yesterday, I’d tried to change them so as to boot from a USB flash drive to install Win 11 from an iso to get rid of the update failed message and somehow must have messed things up and my SSD C drive had disappeared from the list of options (no idea how) and I was stupidly trying to boot from a non-bootable hard drive!
Sometimes, when you’re old like me, it takes a second pair of eyes to see the problem!

In this guide, i have listed multiple solution for the Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device error message boot problem. We start with the most common problems and solutions, just follow the guide and try the steps.

Once you have your system working properly where it is booting from the hard drive properly, note that in the future, should you wish to boot from a device other than the hard disk, for example, a USB drive, do this:

1) Power on the system.

2) As soon as you turn the system on, keep repeatedly tapping on the F11 key (tap, tap, tap). It may take just a little while, but rather than booting Windows, a boot menu should be displayed after a little while.

3) From the boot menu, select the device to boot from.

This serves as a one-time boot exception so that you do not need to change the boot device in the BIOS. The next you boot, the system will still boot normally from your hard disk.

NOTE: F11 is the key used by MSI motherboards. This can be different on other systems. Some systems use F7, F8, ESC, etc. but F11 should work on your MSI based system.

Thanks, hsehestedt. To get into the BIOS on my Mesh computer, it’s Esc or Del - or is the F11 a different command?
I hadn’t realised this was a one-off setting, so have learned something.
I used to be OK on BIOS stuff, but then all this UEFI, or whatever it’s called, stuff came along and I’m no longer sure what I need to select to boot in any specific order.

I don't know if I can say that all systems, but certainly most UEFI based systems do have a hotkey that will bring up a boot menu. At least every system I have ever worked with had this capability.

To answer your question more directly, yes, F11 is separate from the hotkey that allows you to enter into the BIOS. However, that same boot menu often has an option to go into the BIOS setup as well.

Asan example, suppose your computer is currently off and you now plug in a bootable UFD (USB Flash Drive). You turn the computer on and keep tapping F11. When the boot menu is displayed it will display each bootable device and you can select which device to boot from. In addition, you should see another entry that allows you to enter into the BIOS setup. Note that the choice you make from that boot menu is a one time selection. It does NOT permanently alter the boot order in the BIOS.

Because of the type of stuff that I am interested in experimenting with, I boot from UFDs and external hard disks EVERY single day. It would be a major pain in the kiester if I had to change the boot order in the BIOS every time I did that. Bringing up the boot menu makes this so much easier.

This stuff happens when you install an OS with other hard drives installed
EFI partition installed on different drive other than the OS drive.

It's best to remove all drives except the OS when installing.

That boot priorities menu is a freaking mess by the way hehe

I'm not sure that I understand what you mean by this. When you say "it won't show up on your screen" what is "it"? Do you mean that Windows will not be displayed on the screen?

As far as the one time boot menu goes, it could care less about what device Windows is set to boot from. It simply scans each device to see if it is bootable and presents a list of all available bootable devices allowing you to select what device to boot from.

The hotkey to use at startup for boot menu should be listed on the bottom of the bios page.

Op just selecting a legacy drive just shows how inept the msi list is there
Not sure hiding legacy devices is a choice in his bios but it sure would make the list shorter hehe
