Photoshop Elements Install fails

Trying to install a licensed copy of Photoshop Elements and the install shield stops with a message saying Internet Explorer v.4.0 or later is required. Install worked fine on W10, but something is missing on W11. IE v.11 is present on the system C drive in the Program Files (x86) folder. Not sure what Adobe is looking for at this point.

What version of Photoshop Elements do you have?

V.5.50.137.0. Yeah, it's old, but it works for me.

That's telling me nothing. Photoshop Elements 5? Pro? What???

Not familiar with Elements, I only know Photoshop. Anyway, my question was to do with how old the program is. And if it's that old, that "may" explain the issue you're seeing. As Windows continues to be updated, they may come a time when compatibility issues may arise.

File dates are 4/11/2003. That's when the package was licensed. I'm sure something changed with IE since W10 that the install shield isn't finding, but I have no idea what that might be. Guess I'll see what Adobe says. I don't use it enough to justify buying another Elements license for $100 yet.

I must have purchased Photoshop Elements 1.0 around 2001 since that is when it came out. That worked OK until I replaced it with Photoshop Elements 11.0 in 2013. I don't remember why I bought the new version. I think I found out that PSE 1.0 was not compatible with Windows 7. I probably need to upgrade it again since technically it is not fully compatible with Windows 10 or 11.

Are Elements applications supported on Windows 10?

Yes. Photoshop Elements 14, Premiere Elements 14, and later versions are compatible with Windows 10.

PSE no longer appears in Adobe's portfolio.

Moreover, AFAIK Adobe no longer license their apps, although already licensed apps are grandfathered. Adobe has gone the subscription model all the way with their Creative Cloud.

Maybe somebody forgot to tell Adobe. They still have Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements for sale on their online store.

Photoshop Elements is offered as a one-time purchase — no subscription required.

That's strange, PSE is no longer listed in the All Products list on the Adobe site


Edit: I wonder if Adobe has other products off the above list that you can still license. I would be very much interested in licensing (not subscribing to) Acrobat Pro

You have to ask? It's the same reason that Microsoft pushes Microsoft 365 instead of the standalone versions of Microsoft Office. They make more money with subscriptions. Adobe like Microsoft prefers a steady stream of money coming in instead of depending upon the whims of people upgrading at some point in the future.

Take me for example. I have only bought Adobe Photoshop Elements twice in the last 22 years. Think how much more money Adobe would have collected from me if I had paid for a subscription that whole time!

Adobe last perpetual licensed Acrobat product was Acrobat 2020 which is what I'm currently using. Since I'm still a registered college student, I was able to get the Student/Teacher discount, so I got it for $109 full version.

That said, I'm also paying the subscription fee for their Photography plan - both Lightroom and Photoshop. Well worth it to me though.

@MisterEd By your reasoning, PSE and Premier Elements would long have gone subscription, too. Well, I am surprised too that the two are still licensed

However, that "steady stream of money" is coming from happy customers who feel the subscription is worth it.

For me, I've been using both Office and Photoshop since the 90s, and rely on both heavily, so for me they are well worth the subscription fee. However, If you're one who rarely uses a program, or just uses it lightly, then a subscription won't be worth it.

In the end it comes down to how much you value the product.

How can you say most customers are satisfied when they don't even know there is a choice? Both Adobe and Microsoft are trying really hard to remove that choice. I agree that many subscription products are pretty good but at what cost? Maybe some people can afford to buy subscriptions for all the products they use. Unfortunately, I am not one of them.

I looked and finally found Photoshop Elements 2023 starting from the main web page. The path was really convoluted so it is evident that Adobe has done that on purpose.

1. Select the Creativity tab and select Explore Photo



2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Download and Install



3. Select Download Photoshop Elements Get Started



4. Select Download 64-bit to download 30-day trial for Adobe Photoshop Elements 2023. In the trial you can select to buy it for $99.99

I think that's a huge stretch to say customers don't know there are other choices. I certainly do and chose what works for my needs.

The fact that Adobe doesn't offer perpetual licenses on all their products, doesn't mean there aren't other choices available elsewhere. At the end of the day no one is forcing you buy anything. Period.

With that, I'm not going to deep dive in this as I've already stated my feelings. At the end of the day get what works for "you".

I probably wouldn't use Photoshop enough to justify a subscription. I have got PSE 2022 installed though. There is the offer to upgrade to the 2023 version for £70.91 (full price £86.56).

Adobe don't push it forward so much now but if you already know about it, typing 'elements' into the Adobe home page search will find it. Also type 'adobe elements' into any search engine and it comes high or at the top of the results. PSE has some good features but I probably won't upgrade. I tend to more use Corel PaintShop Pro.

Freebies from Adobe (from the FAQ)

Note that there is a free 'Photoshop Express' in the list of freebies although I know nothing more about it.
