I have asked this before, long long ago and cant remember the fix. One of the programmes I had to reinstall was Photoshop and its showing the images I took last night in the format of the attached image. Had a good look through PSE but cant find the switch/tick. Image folder.

Assuming that you are using the media view in Elements there are a full set of options to control what is, and what is not, displayed within Elements internally ...

This should allow you to display each of the formats that You Use in the best way for your needs

There are also a set of options for display within the Windows file Manger and this is best set to use the windows Photos app for it's general spread of defaults

Hi there

I think Full Photoshop etc version CS2 is still available on the Internet archives with a Generic key. ("Abandonware" from Adobe or whatever) and I'm still using full photoshop CS6 - with a decent modern digital camera -- I'm not going in for any of the new stuff as it's not really necessary and I HATE subscription models. Old editions of Adobe lightroom also brilliant.

CS2 is stll streets ahead of the hobbled "Photoshop Elements".

I've often had to produce pics of pro standard of A3+ in size and even of A2 -- not something I'd do with a "hobbled consumer grade" app with a mobile phone camera.

Another alternative is to use the free GIMP application -- improving daily !!!!.

Anyway hope the link helps.

The only thing you might encounter is that the RAW options for newer digital cameras won't be available -- not really a problem as the Camera software will usually be able to convert the RAW format to PSD or even TIFF when you can use the Photoshop app to process your image, then save it in whatever format you like.

Hi Bar; I know the answer is in Edit etc but damned if I can find it. All the other images on the pc are fine, no problems, its only since I reinstalled PSE that this folder has switched. I fixed it the last time, thanks to friends in here. PS: this is PSE 2019 by the way. I have seen mentions to this CS2 a few times but it meant nothing to me, having looked online, is this what I am looking for:

PhSp_CS2_English.exe (under tag Windows)

Try and download it and see -- it might be "Just what the Doctor ordered". You can always uninstall if No good or doesn't do what you want. It's quite safe and Virus Free BTW,

Even easier if you use VM's, Just delete the VM if the software doesn't work in your environment. I've though found with VM's even the Canon "Remote" picture taking application works OK - but you need decent hardware otherwise you'll be thumb twiddling for ages while processing layers or several large MB of other effects. Have a good "Scratch data area" or several if you have enough disks preferably on (a) separate SSD('s) even if using a VM and set it to "Native" or "Physical Disk" rather than the VM disk format.

Cheers
jimbo

.dng is adobe's own RAW image format it is a universal container for images shot in RAW format in high end DSLR Cameras, and some modern Phones ( Adobe created this format to allow a single format that you can convert from the many individual manufacturer versions),

Adobe have stated that they will always support DNG in future software, so it is a good idea to convert all RAW files to this format so that you will always be able to edit it in future. I personally use DNG converted automatically from Sony ARW files but I cannot see any use for converting any other file type such as .JPG

Adobe did create a codec to display .DNG files in windows explorer which should allow you to see the contents of the files in thumbnails

Downloaded CS2 and installed correctly. Opened one of the logo'd images and it said cant open this file.
Went back to PSE2019 and installed Adobe codecs as per Bars link. Installed. ASeems to work but folder shows image logo. Click on one and the image opens normally but no use to ne as I need to see image before I click on it (normal view). Image taken with small panasonic lumix does not show logo. Same card, but with Nikon P1000 - logo. I am going to reset camera soo if that helps??? Well, no longer logo, nice clear images. Now will try with diff card too. interesting, looks like it was the camera all along. What I did do was the pilot howed me ho to take an image of a flying helo so that the blades did not appear still, eg; blur. I think this set off the RAW process in the camera, which made this weird .dng format, which PS does not like. Hmmm, going to have a good look at cam settings now to see if RAW comes up on screen, which it did when on 'pilot' setting. Reset cam, and images are now 'normal'. RAW was on screen when using the changed settings. Maybe what is needed is a section that defines which formats PSE can 'see' and find .dng. ( I did put those codecs in, but nothing yet, will do a reboot). Thanks for the CS2, I am goig to look at that when I get a few mins.

I opened PS and loaded a logo pic. It opened properly saved a .jpg and its on my folder now. At least I can convert them to see what I am looking at.

Jimbo - whats a VM?

I shoot exclusively in RAW, In my case I use Sony Pro level Cameras and convert to DNG when importing into Adobe Lightroom [one advantage in this is that the normal system with a RAW file is that any edits you perform are stored in a "Sidecar" file separate from the image, this can become separated from the image and you lose the edits, which can be several hours worth of work :( - DNG format stores the edits within the file ]

The reason to use RAW if possible is that these files contain much more data than a more general file such as Tiff, PNG, and especially .JPG the extra data available allows you to recover over and under exposed images which at the pro level can mean getting that one off shot of a lifetime rather than some badly exposed shadow of the original

Virtual Machine !!!! Q.E.D !!!

Suggest -- please note NOT being nasty here -- but break up that long huge text into paragraphs with line spacing -- much easier to read and respond to comments

Big block of contiguous text is hard to get "Brain around" and respond to the issue in question especially if Eng is not ist language although I think mine is pretty good -- most US guy's though think I come from Australia -- strange though as that great country (AUS) -- love it -- is at the opposite end of the planet from me. !!

(Have even learned a bit about Cricket from "Aussies") --if you can understand that game then any Windows problems surely pale into insignificance. !!

Cheers

The major issue with .JPG images is that they use a "lossy" compression algorithm, everytime you edit and save a JPG file you lose detail from the image

My basic file size for each image out of camera is around 25MB, just opened a RAW file and saved it as a JPG, without changing anything and the image is 6.69MB so the image has lost approximately three quarters of the details that was in the original
If you redited the .JPG image the same level of detail would be lost each time it was saved

If I ever have to produce a .JPG I will work on the original RAW file and only create a single JPG image - which is never edited - any further edits are done back on the fully detailed RAW file, and a New conversion performed

no offence taken. I was desperate to get info down before I forgot it, and wrote/typed it whilst running back and forward to camera, chips, looking, trying, and stuff!! Oh I do understand Cricket, but thats english, windows is american.

I uninstalled Photoshop to see what would happen. The images, in every folder that I have images in (a lot), have all changed from the PSE logo to this below. Does this mean that something is taking ownership of all my images. I am doing loads of work image/web wise and cant do anything now.

Deleted and reinstalled - same result, logo changed back to PSE.

Edit: I got my pics back. I opened folder and clicked on 3 buttons, opening see more options and folder options and eventually view. Tere was a tick on view as icons not images!!! Not something I have ever seen before so I unticked this and my images began appearing, more win 11 messing ??????

I had also deleted CS2 I had downloaded to look at, in case of conflicts.

It's a Photoshop thing. I haven’t used Photoshop in a long time, so I can’t tell if there is a selection during the installation that you can take away that it doesn’t change the icons.

No it's NOT a "Photoshop thing". Both my tiff and jpeg files auto preview just fine when associated with Photoshop. Don't know how you can validate such a statement when you say this...."I haven’t used Photoshop in a long time", but as one who is actually using Photoshop, it NOT a Photoshop thing, and files open just fine...

No idea what the OP's issue is, but Photoshop previews work fine here.
