Solved Photoshop

Just scanned an image in Photoshop Elements, it automatically wants me to save it as a .bmp. Why? I would rather .jpg was the default, but see no way of doing it.

Have you tried the "Save for Web" option?
I think once you change the option to Jpeg, it will use that format all the time.

Thanks, it seems to have worked. I got two png images and saved one to jpg. closed it down, opened and loaded 2nd jpg and jpg was the option to save it. GREAT!!!

Nice. I actually don't have Photoshop Elements but I have the very old Photoshop CS2. I just thought it would work, too.
