Picking the right air cooler


Before I went down the Corsair AIO route for my current build Noctua air coolers were the only brand I used to buy. Never bothered me if the cooler wouldn't win a beauty contest, as long as it fitted in the case, wasn't a pain to install, and did what it was supposed to.

The logic of a large CPU cooler is that it dissipates more heat from the CPU. Thus a high TDP CPU requires a higher capacity tower cooler which is larger and two fans.
The TDP and the cooling required is a consideration as to what CPU you buy.

It is the job of Case fans to move hot air out of the case, which includes hot air from the CPU cooler, whilst keeping a positive pressure inside the case to minimise dust ingress from case ventilation holes/grids etc.
To that end usually requires more input fans than output fans.

To an extent, hence the use of fans on the top of the case.

I see your point. How do determine what "size" cpu fan to get? I want to get a fan that is a little more than what I need but doesn't go to extreme.

TLDR?
This is just my opinion and how I have always setup a system/case


There should only be one exhaust, that would be the rear fan (Caveat being top case fans, mentioned below) When your case allows for fans at the top of the case, these should also always be used as an exhaust system

Front to back airflow:

A tower CPU cooler is designed to catch that front-to-back breeze inside the case.

  • Cool air is pulled in through the front of the case by front fans
  • The tower cooler sits directly in the path of that airflow
  • The tower cooler’s fan pushes the cool air through its metal fins, which carry away the heat from the CPU
  • The warm air that picks up the heat continues moving toward the back of the case, where it’s pushed out by the rear exhaust fan

This setup lets air flow in a straight line, cooling the CPU without interrupting the rest of the airflow in the case. It’s practicle, and it helps keep everything running smoothly without hot spots. (Hopefully)


Top case fans:

I’m still on the fence about top fans. Possible for them to interrupt the flow from front to back cooling. Having said that, I have three fas on top used as an exhaust. But I have never seen temperature issues. The tower fans are close enough to the rear exhaust for the Front-to-back air flow not to be interrupted, maybe?

Top-mounted fans should be set as exhaust sucking hot air out of the case because heat naturally rises. As your CPU, GPU, and other parts generate heat, it rises upward inside the case. Top fans help remove that hot air, preventing it from getting trapped.

Using top fans as intake (pulling air in) can disrupt the natural front-to-back airflow. In many setups, it may even pull hot air back into the case — especially if the GPU or CPU cooler is already pushing hot air upward.

The typical fan arrangement should be (in my opinion):
  • Front fans = intake (cool air in)
  • Bottom fans = intake (cool air in)
  • Side fans - intake (If available, cool air in)
  • Rear fans = exhaust (hot air out)
  • Top fans = exhaust (hot air out)
That should give you a smooth airflow path from front to back and bottom to top

And then… there is liquid cooling for CPU’s. Same way, the fans of the cooling system should be an exhause, although by default, that’s the only way tey will fit. I have clearly never used liquid cooling.

I have a Ryzen 7 7700X and was using the Noctua NH-U12S without issue.
Since my case has the room I just upgraded to Noctua NH-U14S and it has drop temps even more.

Top case fans:

I’m still on the fence about top fans. Possible for them to interrupt the flow from front to back cooling. Having said that, I have three fas on top used as an exhaust. But I have never seen temperature issues. The tower fans are close enough to the rear exhaust for the Front-to-back air flow not to be interrupted, maybe?

Top-mounted fans should be set as exhaust sucking hot air out of the case because heat naturally rises. As your CPU, GPU, and other parts generate heat, it rises upward inside the case. Top fans help remove that hot air, preventing it from getting trapped.

Using top fans as intake (pulling air in) can disrupt the natural front-to-back airflow. In many setups, it may even pull hot air back into the case — especially if the GPU or CPU cooler is already pushing hot air upward.

The typical fan arrangement should be (in my opinion):
  • Front fans = intake (cool air in)
  • Bottom fans = intake (cool air in)
  • Side fans - intake (If available, cool air in)
  • Rear fans = exhaust (hot air out)
  • Top fans = exhaust (hot air out)
That should give you a smooth airflow path from front to back and bottom to top

And then… there is liquid cooling for CPU’s. Same way, the fans of the cooling system should be an exhause, although by default, that’s the only way tey will fit. I have clearly never used liquid cooling.

The link has them sorted by price, but you can also sort by noise level. Recall that a 3dB difference is about the practical minimum for noticeably different loudness.

I'm sorry that there are so many to choose from.

I suggest a tower type. Large fans tend to be quieter than small ones for similar airflow. The more heat pipes, the merrier.

That case only has 161mm clearance.

Was that aimed at me? I was thinking more in terms of 120mm fans vs. 92mm or smaller.

The NH-D15 is Noctua's largest retail model, I think. It uses nonstandard 140mm fans with a 120mm hole pattern.

Probably more than needed for a Ryzen 5 7600X.

The NH-U12S may fit, but it's spec'd at 158mm tall with fan. There is probably a little adjustment possible in the fan height.

Shorter towers with 120mm fans may raise concerns about RAM clearance. However, the Silicon Power XPOWER Zenith 32GB don't look tall.
