Apps Pin or Unpin Copilot Side Pane on Desktop in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to pin or unpin the Copilot side pane on the right side of your desktop for your account in Windows 11.

The Copilot setting in this tutorial is no longer available.


A preview of Copilot in Windows will start rolling out with the next wave of continuous innovation in Windows 11 version 22H2 KB5030310 Build 22621.2361 on September 26, 2023. Copilot in Windows adds AI to your Windows 11 experience to help you find answers, complete tasks, and be more productive. With Copilot, people can quickly make sense of long articles on the web, craft and polish content, or create stunning images--all directly within the Windows 11 experience.

Windows Copilot will use the same Microsoft account (MSA) or Microsoft Entra ID (Azure Active Directory) account used to sign-in to Windows.

Windows Copilot will appear as a side bar docked to the right where it won’t overlap with your desktop content and will run unobstructed alongside your open app windows, allowing you to interact with Windows Copilot anytime you need.

Starting with Windows 11 build 26010 (Canary) and build 23601 (Dev), Microsoft is trying out the ability to “undock” Copilot in Windows with Windows Insiders. Just click the new icon to unpin the Copilot panel at the top right in the header. While undocked, Copilot can appear above or below other apps in Windows while maintaining its fixed position on the desktop. This allows users to access Copilot while minimizing disruption to other user activities. Additionally, can resize the Copilot window for a more comfortable experience. Simply click-and-drag the edge of the Copilot window to adjust the width to your needs.

When set to unpin Copilot side pane, app windows can open and maximize on top of the Copilot side pane.

When set to pin Copilot side pane, the Copilot side pane is attached (pinned) to the right side of the desktop where app windows open and maximize only on the desktop area and not on top of the Copilot side pane. Currently, this does also cause desktop icons to be rearranged.


Here's How:

1 Open Copilot (Win+C).

2 Click/tap on the (Pin side pane or Show side by side) OR (unpin side pane or Show as overlay) (default) toggle button at the top of the Copilot side bar for what you want. (see screenshots below)

I don't see the button to unlink Copilot in the sidepane? How did you get that option?
II'm on Build 22621.2506, when Copilot opens the sidepane it screws up my desktop layout.

I got the Pin/Unpin button on Canary 25922, the good thing about it is that when unpinned it leaves my desktop icons alone as in my normal layout.
When pinned it screws up the layout as before. 😜
Looks likes instead of fixing the bug properly they took the easy way around it. Better than the original bug anyway. 😂😂😂🤷‍♂️

Yeah, pin will basically refresh (aka: mess up) your desktop as it resizes the desktop to pin the side pane.

The problem is that it resizes and rearranges even when there is no need for it and has plenty of empty space on the right side of the screen.
The behavior is not even consistent, it only happens in some situations but not all.
In some cases, depending on the Resolution and Scale settings of the screen it rearranges, in other cases it does not.
Typical MS inconsistent behavior. 🤣🤣🤣😝🤷‍♂️

Yes, that works.
Had to do that with all the machines with Local account.
Still cannot figure out what they set different in the registry to remember that it was a MS account. 😎🤷‍♂️
If I set up a new user as Local Account, it has no Copilot unless I switch to MSA and back to Local. 😂😂

Thanks, I've just got Copilot for my Canary build's local account following your lead.

Whether you get copilot or not with a local account seems fairly random. I have three supported machines and two unsupported ones running the RTM build that have been updated to 23H2. All have local accounts with my MS account added as an account MS apps can use, as per Kari's Hybrid Account tutorial.

Of the supported devices, 2 out of 3 got Copilot with a local account without me doing anything, for the unsupported devices it was 1 out of 2. I suppose that it's just about possible that the ones that got copilot had at some time in the past temporarily switched to an MS account, and it left a trace in the registry. TBH although I recall doing that once or twice, I cannot remember which machines I did it on.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

I have one that got copilot with a local account too, but the difference is that at some point that user was using a MS account.
It is not random at all. Just try adding a local account user and it will not get Copilot till you switch to MSA and then back. 😎
The question is what is saved and where to remember about the previously used MS account. 🤷‍♂️

That makes sense, and I know some of my machines certainly had temporarily switched to an MS account, then back to a local one (just can't remember which :D).
