Apps Pin or Unpin Copilot Side Pane on Desktop in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to pin or unpin the Copilot side pane on the right side of your desktop for your account in Windows 11.

The Copilot setting in this tutorial is no longer available.


A preview of Copilot in Windows will start rolling out with the next wave of continuous innovation in Windows 11 version 22H2 KB5030310 Build 22621.2361 on September 26, 2023. Copilot in Windows adds AI to your Windows 11 experience to help you find answers, complete tasks, and be more productive. With Copilot, people can quickly make sense of long articles on the web, craft and polish content, or create stunning images--all directly within the Windows 11 experience.

Windows Copilot will use the same Microsoft account (MSA) or Microsoft Entra ID (Azure Active Directory) account used to sign-in to Windows.

Windows Copilot will appear as a side bar docked to the right where it won’t overlap with your desktop content and will run unobstructed alongside your open app windows, allowing you to interact with Windows Copilot anytime you need.

Starting with Windows 11 build 26010 (Canary) and build 23601 (Dev), Microsoft is trying out the ability to “undock” Copilot in Windows with Windows Insiders. Just click the new icon to unpin the Copilot panel at the top right in the header. While undocked, Copilot can appear above or below other apps in Windows while maintaining its fixed position on the desktop. This allows users to access Copilot while minimizing disruption to other user activities. Additionally, can resize the Copilot window for a more comfortable experience. Simply click-and-drag the edge of the Copilot window to adjust the width to your needs.

When set to unpin Copilot side pane, app windows can open and maximize on top of the Copilot side pane.

When set to pin Copilot side pane, the Copilot side pane is attached (pinned) to the right side of the desktop where app windows open and maximize only on the desktop area and not on top of the Copilot side pane. Currently, this does also cause desktop icons to be rearranged.


Here's How:

1 Open Copilot (Win+C).

2 Click/tap on the (Pin side pane or Show side by side) OR (unpin side pane or Show as overlay) (default) toggle button at the top of the Copilot side bar for what you want. (see screenshots below)

The requirement for MS Account was added when they released the new Copilot preview to the general public.
It wasn't needed before that with any insider builds, but now it is required even with Canary. 😂😉

I can see what is changed in Canary 25992 that can be bringing new Pin/Unpin button in Copilot.
Looks like they switched the standard MS Edge to use the latest version of EDGE DEV instead.
When I try opening the Standard MS EDGE I get this one instead, that version gets the new button in Copilot. 😎😉

Yes, I verified that too.
I wonder why the button does not come back when I turn Edge preview back on and get the latest Dev Edge?
I had to restore my backup to get the Pin/Unpin button back. 😂🤐🤷‍♂️

Hello Brink,
I found a way to force using Edge Dev on opening Copilot even on Public Build 22631.2715, it usually defaults to Microsoft Edge, I just changed one setting to use Microsoft Edge Dev.
That gives me the pin/unpin button which I set for unpinned to avoid the desktop rearrangement. 😉
I went to Settings>Default Apps and for MICROSOFT-EDGE I set the Default to Microsoft Edge Dev. (Microsoft Edge Canary works too)
See screenshot below.
That gives me the pin/unpin button on Copilot Side Pane. 👍
MICROSOFT-EDGE is the command used when opening Copilot.
microsoft-edge:///?ux=copilot&tcp=1&source=taskbar

Note the pin/unpin button with Dev Build 23595 at first did not show up when this extra feature ID was enabled, I had to disable it to get the pin/unpin button to show up. 🤣🤣🤣😜🤐
Typical MS screwup. The ID below is used for Windows 10, I have no idea why it is enabled with Dev Build 23595. 🤷‍♂️

I don't remember the prompt, but I see the pin/unpin button that also changes the size of the side panel, both settings remember the size of the panel as previously set.
Looks like they changed or added another function to that button which is only available when I select Edge Dev for Copilot link MICROSOFT-EDGE. 🤣

They also finally fixed the problem that was re-arranging all my desktop icons when opening Copilot. Now the icons stay in the same position when Copilot side panel opens. Unfortunately, the fix seems to work only on 2 out of three machines. Not clear what causes the different behavior. 😎😜

This one laptop Lenovo Yoga 920 still failed and re-arranged the icons. 🤷‍♂️
I figured out the difference with the other 2 that were no longer failing.
The ones working without rearranging the icon have this extra entry in the registry, so I added the same on the one that was failing, and it finally worked fine like the other 2. Also, it kept working correctly after I deleted that entry and rebooted again.
Seems like that entry just triggered the fix. 😉
