Power outage

Hi,

Power outage just happened at my house while I'm playing games on my PC, if the PC turn on and work properly should I be worried about anything? I just clean install my PC a week ago, should I redo it? I have OCD, I'm worried it will cause any problem in a long term use.

Windows today seems very robust. With Windows 95, I remember a power cut could trigger a "HAL not found" and I would have to reinstall. Took ages.

In a command window run
Chkdsk c:

This will check for any corruption in the file system.

Chances are very slim that there any issues as already mentioned

If such an event occurred when e.g. writing files registry items, and you had not thought to protect yourself, you could be in real trouble. In particular if it happened during a Windows update, you could end up with an unbootable PC.

If these events are common, get a UPS (uninterruptible power supply). At the very least, a surge protector.

You should, as a matter of course, be using 3rd party disk imaging to external storage routinely (e.g. Macrium Reflect, Hasleo Backup....) - free versions available, of at least all your O/S partitions.

In addition to the above, run Crystal Diskinfo (free) - simply launch and look, click tabs on left to view status of each disk in turn.

I have had two desktop PSUs fail and a UPS would not have helped.

Does anyone make a UPS that bypasses your PSU? It would last longer if the battery only had to supply the DC voltages needed by the motherboard and the drives / accessories.

Windows these days seems very robust for these sorts of problems. Unless you are running a whole slew of critical real time stuff e.g stock trading then presumably you would have both hardware and software to mitigate against this. For typical domestic users Windows usually has enough internal logging etc to restart --- whether your application software has this facility - that depends - but Windows is probably OK in that dept.

Where I am power outages are about as rare as hens teeth !!! Iceland is 100% self sufficient in clean power generation - I've sometimes though hard switched computers off - and so far no probs with restarts.

I'd imagine in the USA or anywhere else with more extreme weather / other supply problems due to ongoing world events etc power outages are more common - but I don't run any critical software -- I really don't need a UPS.

Windows IMHO for home users is robust enough at this level and Linux has always had good recovery for donkeys years.

Of course it wouldn't. PSU failure is a completely different issue to a power outage.. and in some areas outages can apparently be common, whereas a catastrophic PSU failure would likely not be repetitive, although a marginal failure of some kind could well cause continual issues.

Again I hope therefore you are using disk imaging routinely.

More often than not power outages (or any other kind of hard shutdown) cause no harm at all, besides losing the current unsaved work, your game progress in this case, and maybe to cause problems in files you're writing as the outage happened, for example if you were downloading a file at that time, it might be corruped and shouldn't be resumed, but restarted again.

But almost always, a chkdsk is enough to ensure proper operation. Other than the annoyance, it's nothing to worry about.

Loss of power may result in critical damage of firmware when you perform BIOS update, PC may be bricked if it doesn't have a built-in backup BIOS. Also a serious system damage may happen when you do a system restore or when Windows performs system update. In other cases, damage will be limited and usually can be repaired after disk check without problems. Loss of 1-2 files, e.g. a saved game is unlikely dramatic. However, unexpected outage is harmful for longevity of storage device, whether it is HDD or SSD.
One of good solutions, besides UPS, is using a laptop, because they have such protection by design, with external keyboard and display when home.
