My power plan seems to be randomly changing to high performance mode on it's own. Can anyone think of an explanation for this? :confused:

Sometimes a WU will do that.
After reading your specs, I would think you'd need a High Performance plan, just to run that beast.



I can see it now... you set your power plan to Balanced, and your computer goes....

Well yes I will use the high performance plan for gaming but I always (manually) switch it back to balanced while on the desktop for power savings. This is definitely something new, I've never seen my power plan changed without my permission.

Your components NEED a lot of power. That may be why the power plan keeps switching.

It could be an app, it could also be a Windows Update.
I run mine on balanced, but every now and then, after a WU, I notice the power plan changes.

I built mine in May 2020. I don't use sleep or hibernate. I've seen mine change maybe two times.
In both cases, it was after a Windows update.

Quite a few Windows Updates have changes to the power plans.

From Googling I've seen two main things...

1. Has to do with Sleep settings.
2. Set all the Power Plans to defaults and try again.


This command run in an elevated command prompt will reset all the power schemes...

powercfg –restoredefaultschemes



NOTE: This assumes you don't have any 3rd party software (motherboard or loop utility maybe), that affects the power plans.

Instead of switching plans you can just use High or Ultimate performance and lower Minimum processor state to 5%.

Excellent sleuthing.

A long time ago, back in 2003-ish, I installed some manufacturer's utilities (motherboard in this case).
I've never done that since. I assign no blame to the manufacturer. I just don't think than can keep up with Microsoft changing things all the time.
Sooner or later, I think this has to cause issues.


Anyway, glad you found the culprit. :)
