Preliminary Test of Hasleo Backup V4.

Hasleo Backup V4 has now been issued.


I have been testing the Beta version, and it was a bit buggy but the release versions seems to be very sound.

So I installed it and created a Windows boot entry - I made sure I included my Intel NVME IRST driver.

I then booted into it and it worked fine - I could see my NVME drives - in the beta, this failed, and I had to add the driver at WinPE stage.

I see they have inproved the backups - before a drive backup backed up every partition - now you can select which partitions to backup.

The Partition restore is still limited to restoring one partition at a time, but that is less critical now due to improvement above.

The gui is simple and ok for beginners but does not have Reflects flexibilty to reorder partitions (but you can do it by restoring one at a time - slightly clunky).

It handles incremental AND differentials.

The inclusion of Delta Restore is a major plus (only paid version of Macrium Reflect and paid versions of lesser known Casper have this feature (to the best of my knowledge).

I di a full backup in 1 min 15 seconds (Reflect 1 min 50 seconds), and restored image making no changes selecting Delta Restore in 30 seconds (Reflect around 50 seconds). Of course, as I made no changes, this is the fastest one could expect.

In the end, the only major Reflect feature it does not have is Image Guardian.

It even has similar ability to Reflect's Redeploy to restore to different hardware (provided you have drivers) although this is an option I rarely use nowadays as W10/W11 manages hardware changes very well by and large.


In the end, the only slight downside is the lack of gui flexibilty (conversely Reflect's gui has flexibility but is not so intuitive for beginners).

Overall, this definitely the best of the modern free offerings and is a serious contender for a Macrium Reflect alternative - just for Delta Restore on its own. Also, it is fast!

This is interesting - if I backup a data partition Hasleo and MRH (5.2 Gbps) take about the same time. I do not have a metric for Hasleo, only total time.

However, if I backup an OS partition, Hasleo is much faster than MRH (2.8 Gbps).

For MRH, I assumed this was related to VSS but if I mount a virtual hard drive with OS in it, the same happens.

I cannot see any obvious reason why Hasleo is faster on OS partitions (or conversely why MRH is slower).

Total guess - the OS drive has literally millions of (mostly small) files where as my data drives have a couple of hundred or so files with a few large ones. Maybe Hasleo is simply more efficient when dealing with lots of file?

Not obvious how to run it in custom pe which is a drawback. It is an advantage to boot into one winpe environment and run all tools from there.

Might be because the compression methods are different.

Thanks @cereberus. Does Hasleo have an option similar to Macrium's "fix boot problems"? When restoring a Macrium image, I've run into having to do that a time or two.

For example this is ventoy usb stick.

The programs are in the folder called USBprograms

when the wim file has booted up all those programs are linked to the desktop or the startmenu.

Much more convenient. It is easy to add/remove/update the programs on the usb stick. There is no need to make changes to the winpe wim to do that. There is no need to keep booting into different winpe to run any of them.

For example there could be 3 or 4 data recovery programs in USBprograms folder , they could all be run to see which one finds what you are looking for.

Or partitioning can be done with any of the tools in USBprograms. I usually include diskgenius and aomei part assist, minitool and any others could also go in there.

aomei backupper and macrium and easeus or whatever can all be in there and run from the one booted winpe environment.

It has a tool called rebuild mbr but when I clicked in it, it said no drive found so I do not know is the simple answer.

Sizes end up the same near enough.

I tried to run it in custom winpe, without success so far. It is relevant to the subject of the thread.

Post #7 explains why that is a major drawback.

Macrium, Aomei and others run fine off the usb stick when booted into custom winpe.

I will post a screenshot in a moment to clarify.

This is the custom winpe desktop. ( it is win11 but I use win7 wallpaper because it looks nice ).

You can see the links to the programs on the usb stick

I added a internet browser to the USBprograms folder ( happens to be palemoon but it could be another browser )

It could be that Hasleo can handle MBR disk's boot problems, but not GPT disk's boot problems?

One thing I do not like with Hasleo, you must have its service running in automatic - progam will not run otherwise.

Although I am sure the reason is benign, we do have an innate trust of Chinese software.

Although Macrium Reflect uses services to notify you when a backup has started/finished, you can choose to disable all services without affecting execution.

2. Click the "Start type" drop-down menu and select the Manual option.
3. Click the Apply and OK buttons.

Hasleo GUI doesn't run with admin privileges, so it doesn't have the privilege to start the service program. [If you must do this, manually run the Hasleo GUI program as an administrator.]

Rebuild MBR: The Master Boot Record (MBR) is very important for traditional BIOS computers; your computer won't be running when the MBR of the disk where the Windows operating system is located is damaged. Fortunately, rebuilding the MBR can easily fix this problem.

Thanks - useful information.

I have adjusted the icon on desktop to run with admin rights, an set service to Manual.

This works fine but I still do not see why we need a service running all the time.

Trouble is we do not really know what the service does i.e. is it doing an ET job "phoning home"?

I will have to remember to turn off service after Hasleo execution.

Still not signed?! So, it is not worth the trouble with the secure boot and such.

Hasleo has no problems with secure boot; the boot menu and bootable media work well.
