Windows 11 Home
Just got a new laptop.
Prevented the first setup of forcing me to use an online account.
Created a local account. After a few updates Windows has decided to log into my Microsoft account without even asking me.
I sign-out, but it keeps signing back in.

How can I prevent Windows from signing into an online account?
I've looked at a few tutorials online, but some of the options mentioned aren't available.

I've installed gpedit.msc (not available on home version), not sure if that is even working properly as I change some policies but don't see them take effect.

If you are 100% positive you are using a local account you can also stop one drive from autostarting.
Open Task Manager>Startup Apps
Find Onedrive in the list and, right click on it, select disable. Then restart. This prevents Onedrive from auto-starting.

Hi,

I tried going into regedit and creating this key. It didn't seem to work after a system restart.

Hi, OneDrive is not listed as a startup app.

I think this started after I logged onto my email through Outlook. Not 100% that this is the main culprit.
I've always been using my browser for emails. First time I thought I'll switch to Outlook and I think that might be the culprit.

This tutorial will show you how to add and remove accounts used by other apps to sign in with for your account in Windows 11.

Windows 11 makes it easy to add the Microsoft accounts or Work or school accounts you use for your apps in one place so you can sign in to your favorite apps easier and faster.

My guess is Option Two.

This tutorial will show you how to switch to a local account from a Microsoft account to sign in to Windows 11 with instead.

You can sign in to Windows 11 with a local account or a Microsoft account. However, you can easily switch between using a local account or a Microsoft account to sign in to Windows 11.

Since "Outlook new" stores its email in the cloud, I agree entering your email into the app caused this problem. What I would do is delete the outlook app since you do not want to use it anyway. It can always be reinstalled from the MS store if you ever want it. Then restart the computer to see if it resolves the problem.

I would use Revo Uninstaller free Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download
I just did it since I do not use that app.
Within Revo, selet "Windows Apps" in left pane. You should see the Outlook New app in the list.. Right click on it and select uninstall.

After it uninstalls, your have an option to scan for leftover files and registry entries.
Delete everything that Revo finds.

Hope it works.

Coincidentally, I ran into basically this same issue today with another user who had purchased a new laptop. Here's how we handled it. We started over with a new local account.. I am assuming you have not moved all your personal files into the new computer yet.

.
DO THIS FROM OLD ACCOUNT

If you have autologon set to on, you will need to disable it. If your current account is not assigned a password you will need to assign it one.

1. (HOME)AS a precaution, Turn off device encryption if it is currently on. Turn On or Off Device Encryption in Windows 11 Tutorial

(PRO) turn off standard Bitlocker. Turn Off BitLocker for Drive in Windows 11 Tutorial

2. Create a new local account
Settings>Accounts>Scroll down and click on Other Users.
Select add account>select I don't have this person's signin information

In user name box name the account and assign a password. Answer password recovery questions.
Very Important- Make the new user an administrator. Once account is created, to the right of the new user name click down arrow. Select Change account type.
Click arrow to right of standard user and select Administrator.

3. This step is necessary ONLY if you have personal files on your computer COPY & PASTE (NOT MOVE) any files you want to keep an external drive. (Documents, Desktop, Music, Pictures, Downloads.) It is important to use copy and paste to prevent permission problems.
If you have any, export all your browser bookmarks to a file and save to external drive. Make note of your browser extensions. The bookmarks can be imported into the browser in your new account and browser extensions reinstalled.

4. Verify for certain the PC has been unlinked from Onedrive.. Unlink Account and PC from OneDrive in Windows 11 Tutorial
Note: even once you unlink the PC from onedrive, your current files are still stored in Onedrive until you manually remove them from Onedrive on the web.
Sign in - Microsoft OneDrive

5. Restart computer.

DO THIS FROM NEW ACCOUNT

6. On signin screen you will see 2 accounts. Select the NEW LOCAL ACCOUNT name and enter its password..
Your new desktop will be created.

7. This step is necessary only if you copied any files in step 3 above.Open the folders on external drive. COPY and PASTE the files you saved to the external media into the personal folders of your new account.
Import browser bookmarks and reinstall extensions.

All settings in the new account will have to be set up new.

8.. Once everything is correct in new account, delete the old account. Settings>Accounts>Other Users>Click the down arrow next to your old account name and click Remove.

You can now either uninstall Onedrive or my preference is to just disable it from autostarting. This stops any onedrive nags.
  1. Right-click the Windows Start button from the bottom of the screen & select task manager
  2. in left pane Select “startup apps” Find Onedrive in list of startup apps, RIGHT click on it and disable.
  3. In the list of processes running find onedrive , right click, and end task
If you choose to uninstall Onedrive instead, I suggest you do so using Revo Uninstaller Free When Revo finishes uninstalling, click Scan. Check and Delete all leftover files and registry entries Revo finds.

If you want bitlocker (Pro) or device encryption(Home) to be on, you can enable them too by using the tutorials I mentioned above.. Note: If you use device encryption in Home, it encrypts ALL your drives that you have connected. Make sure to record any recovery keys you are given.

Hi,

I really appreciate the lengthy post. I feel like it is a lot of steps to take and doesn't sound like it is future-proof.
My laptop was logging onto a local account for the first few days, then decided to switch to the online account without my consent. I feel like this could still happen after taking the suggested steps.

I was looking for a registry key to change which would prevent Windows from attempting to sign-in in the future.

AFAIK There is no 100% future proof so I'm not sure you will find what you want. You use Home so there is no group policy. MS is determined to hook a user to the cloud, especially Home users.
Are you absolutely sure that during initial setup you did not initially enter your MS account? Is the only time you entered a MS account was in outlook?

If a MS account was ever entered in any shape, form, or fashion during setup, this possibly has something to do with device encryption that is enabled by default on all drives when one uses Home with a MS account. The key to unlock device encryption is stored in one's MS account. You might check that
device encryption is NOT enabled. If it is, that is a clear indication a MS account was entered during initial setup in some way. Turn On or Off Device Encryption in Windows 11 or maybe it's no more than the PC is linked to Onedrive.

There's really no way for us to know what it is. If you started out with a local account from the get-go, and from how you are describing your issue, it's my opinion your account is corrupted in some way. The only way to prove that is to use another account. I guarantee MS does not change a local user account to a MS account without some action on the user's part. triggering it. If you signed into the MS store, that will do it.

And yes, my instructions were long because I detailed them to make sure a user's data was protected. (You may have no data to protect but anyone reading this might) Without data backup the entire process takes less than 15 minutes.

I'm 100% certain I started off with a local account. I had turned off the internet and had done a CMD command to bypass something, which allowed me to continue with setup.

I think you're right, it was corrupted in some way.
Since my last message I had gone into services and turned off "User Profile Service" which was a terrible mistake. Because on reboot there were no profiles to sign into and windows would freeze. Wouldn't allow me to access ctrl+alt+del or even use the shut down option.
Luckily enough I restored windows to a restore point from yesterday.

Somehow when it rebooted, it didn't log onto the Microsoft account and kept it local.
So I'm avoiding using Outlook, and Office365 even though I had used my work email with these initially.

I also noticed in Windows Security it asks me to switch to an online account for better "security".

At one point I must've clicked "Allow this app to sign into all apps" Not sure what the right question is. But usually comes up when you first sign into teams or an Office365 account. That may have triggered the Windows account to change over as well.

Jeez they are so sneaky. I even considered formatting and switching to LTSC.

TLDR - Accidentally fixed the issue with a System Restore.
