I dint know if any body has ran across this before I have a Epson et4850 and windows can't seem to communicate with it anymore when I got to scan on the front panel it gives a communication error I was told but Epson that some isn't letting third party communicate with it I was on the phone for 2hours with Epson I can scan another way but it work of the control panel it has always worked before do you think one of the windows updat has done this thank all

Front panel of the Printer/Scanner? Sounds like you are using wireless and the printer has lost it’s connection. (You haven’t told us how it is connected) perhaps the connection between the printer and the router.

The cheats way: I would uninstall any Epson Software, remove the printer from Devices in settings and go through the install process again.

Or check the user manual for reconnection troubleshooting.

If its a network printer, setting a static IPv4 address, and creating a TCP/IP port with that static in the printer properties>ports tab, should keep the connection reliable. (I would also take the extra step of disabling IPv6 in the printer settings)

The WSD configuration microsoft likes to use breaks all the time

If Epson tried to help you and you still aren’t connecting to your PC.

- Download the latest setup Software
- Remove the printer from your devices in settings”
Click Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners. Click on the printer you want to remove and click on Remove device.​
- Uninstall any Epson software
- Reinstall the software, follow the prompts.
- Select which way you would like to connect, follow the prompts

Yes I have but if I write direct won't I need a splitter for my cables then I only have one connecter for the cat 5

I have an Epson ET4750 connected to my network by WiFi. I've been using it reliably for years, never had any connection issues. At first with Windows 10 and now with Windows 11. From my router....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Yeah if I go into Epson smart scan I can scan fine I just think it should also work from the control panel

If you are talking the nonEnvy models, the Envy models I now recommend are replacing one HP inkjets. I recommend the Envy models because they are USB, multifunco, and as reliable as the LaserJet printerd that originally put HP printers in homes and offices from 1985 to 2000.

Nobody is talking about HP, this is an Epson printer issue, as per the first post. You brought up HP.
