I have just taken over a PC with Windows 11.
I re-registered it to my MS account and all seems OK - except:
I keep getting a message sayin I should sign in to Windows Defender to stay current BUT it is asking me to sign in using the previous owners details.
How do I reset this to my account.
Any suggestions welcome.

Is the previous owner still there? Look in C:\windows\users and in Settings......Accounts...Other users. You must be logged in as an Admin.

I am not sure why it’s asking you to sign in to Windows Defender. I’ve never had to do that. The computer is now linked to your Microsoft Account. Defender isn’t account regulated, it’s Windows regulated.

At least that’s how I understand it to be.

I think you need to do a clean install of Windows!

I believe that is the Defender App, you could probably/maybe uninstall it.
Windows Security, (Defender), will continue to work on it's own.

Is there not an option in the top right to sign out of the current/old account?

Also, you might have the other MS account linked to other Microsoft apps, such as OneDrive, Office, or Skype.

Thanks - that was the issue. I didn't realise there was a Defenders app seperate to the Windows security system. It seems like it is part of the Office 365 subscription and the previous owner never subscribed to 365 so never signed in to Defender either. When I uninstalled the pre-installed 365 I never knew to unistall Defender seperately. So hopefully it is now gone.

I have another question but will post that seperately.

Indeed, it is most likely previous owner installed it, maybe at the suggestion of MS if he was signed in. Its an app to monitor multiple devices that use MS Defender.

Edit: Absolutely no need to clean install, assuming you know well the person who had it before you.

I would never use a second hand computer without wiping it and reinstalling Windows.

If you're going to reset it, might as well do a fresh install, there could be lingering issues with the current installation.

Not sure that makes any difference really. The smart play is to knock it flat and install fresh. If you do a reset anyway, it's not much more trouble to just do a fresh install. You don't have to hang around and watch it do all the gymnastics, just fire off the install and come back when it's done.
