I have an old program Paint Shop Pro X2, it works fine but sometimes after I close with the X in the top right corner it it will not reopen because it is still running in Task Manager, If I close it there it is fine again. is there some cure or something I can add to the properties to force it to close fully. Thanks

Hey, Rod. Have you tried closing it from the file menu? If so, does that still cause it to run in the background? You could try the solution @Necrosaro suggested. That would require creating a desktop icon, and I'm not sure if that's something you want to do.

Be aware (reminded) Paint Shop Pro X2 is 15 years old, so it may be showing its age as Windows 11 continues to get updates. Point being I wouldn't put all my eggs in the basket that it's a "Windows 11" issue; especially if no other apps are experiencing the same.

Just something to think about ;-)

Process Explorer? You should be able to find out what is causing the process to not close properly.

One of the reasons I stuck with the even older versions, is that they didn't have problems. :)

I have a copy of Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI, build date in 2006. Just installed it on my Win11 and seems no issues yet.

I agree, I use 7 and 9 as well as X2 and Ultimate, I use a different one depending on what I am doing

Thanks Jason, I have tried all those things, it only happens now and again and I think it may have something to do with having a file open within the program, I just wonder if anyone would know a quick fix, it is no big issue

The only real issue I've seen in closing a program with a file open is when it hasn't been saved after changes were made but always get a prompt to save. Does the problem still exist after first closing the file?

A 'fleeting' thought, what is the status of your Virtual Memory/paging file/swapfile? Could be closing the program isn't clearing it from physical RAM. Many older programs relied on that feature when running.

This appears to be an exclusively 'Corel' problem, and has been reported by Corel PSP users for many versions, not just your X2.....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

Could be something in the coding that's starting to have issues under new OS's. The other thing that might help is a reinstall. Might clear up whatever is happening.

Sometimes when we get fixated on one thing it turns out to be something else. Been there, done that :confused:
