I must be slipping with my network knowledge. A few months ago I installed Starlink for internet access. It has been fantastic and nestled in effectively to my ethernet network. I am now setting up a new computer and I can't get discovery because the Starlink connection is a public network. So, can I change the Starlink to private so I can connect this computer correctly to my network? If not, how do I add the ethernet adapter to the ethernet?

Short answer: Yes, set your network to "private".

Since Windows Vista, to see other devices on your network you must set it to "work" or "home". In Windows 10 and 11 these two are merged into "private". Therefore, if you set your network to "public" you essentially mark it as insecure network that you only use for internet access and you don't want to share your files with. That explains why you cannot see other computers in your network and others cannot see you. If you set the network to "private" you mark it as trusted and you can share you files and see other shared resources on the network. To change from "public" to "private", click on the network icon on the taskbar to see the list of available connections. Then right-click on Starlink connection and select Properties. Finally switch from "public" to "private". Changes take effect immediately.

Hello @fmw, :alien:

You should be able to use an option in the tutorial below to change your network location to "Private".

Thanks gents. So it is simple. I checked the internet and it wanted me to add a separate router and connect the Starlink box to it. I could do that but thought I would see what you folks think. I appreciate the advice. I need this computer to access the NAS so I'll get on it. Thanks, again.
