I'll be loading SOLIDWORKS to my new PC soon and was advised to increase my system RAM from 16 to 32GB to insure I'll have no issues with 3D-modeling.
Here's my question-
I'm a bit confused as to the required speed for the new memory module.
TASK MANAGER details RAM speed at 2933MHz while CPU-Z shows a 3200MHz module is presently in the PC
When I search for the PN, reported by CPU-Z, I find the Samsung module is rated at 3200MHz.
My goal here is to purchase the same module I presently have . When done I want (2) 16GB modules of the same type and by the same manufacturer.
What am I missing here--I'm a bit confused as to what to purchase.
FWIW- the folks at DELL CUSTOMER SUPPORT were of NO help-I obviously had the misfortune of working with a poorly trained Service Tech.....

Is there a reason for CURCIAL over the SAMSUNG module

Isn't it best to have identical modules----This is what I;ve been told but have NO experience with this....

I wasn't suggesting you buy crucial, what it will do is tell you exactly which memory spec you need, where or who you buy from is up to you and yes always good practise to have matching modules

Got ya!
It's just a bit confusing that the CPU-Z app lists the Samsung module with different specs than what's shown on the Crucial site for my specific PC.
It's getting late here----I'll follow up on this in the morning.....

As listed by CPU-Z, your RAM is Samsung m378a2g43ab3-cwe. It's available from Amazon, for example. https://www.amazon.com/Tech-Replacement-Samsung-M378A2G43AB3-CWE-M378A2G43AB3-CWE-ATC/dp/B08R6BR9MN

It's not absolutely necessary that the DIMMs be identical, but it's possible that if their timings don't match, there could be a problem. (Which could be resolved by manually setting the RAM timings. I have done that, but it was years ago.) It's easiest to get an exact match.

Apparently your PC is running the RAM at 2 X 1466 MHz. (CPU-Z reports the clock frequency. Double Data Rate RAM transfers at twice that.)

You may be able to change the BIOS settings to get the full 3200 MHz rate, although you may not be able to easily detect the rate change.

However, you'll be going from single channel to dual channel RAM mode, which may nearly double the possible data rate. That'll be worthwhile, in addition to expanding the RAM.

Not to brag, but my Amazon (Marketplace) link was the lowest cost. Care must be taken with Amazon Marketplace sellers, but this one has a pretty good customer rating.

I stick personally stick with Amazon as returns are quick and unquestioned if needed. I will pay a little more because of that fact alone.

Late to the party, but do realize one thing.

The RAM sticker shows that it is denoted by the manufacturer to be stable at that speed - 3200. Your CPU-Z screenshot shows 4 different JEDEC standards that can be used by your RAM, notice that even though 2 of them show 1600, the timings are, in fact different.

Windows Task Manager, and the Memory tab in CPU-Z, will show what your RAM is actually running at. Task manager can be faulty, though, but CPU-Z will show you right off.

For example, notice in your screenshot, the first JEDEC table shows a Freq of 1466. With a multiplier of 2, that makes the frequency reported as 2932 (if it were exact), so Windows TM reporting 2933 is actually probably correct. The Memory tab in CPU-Z will tell you more.

That being said, you can probably get more out of your RAM by adjusting some values in your BIOS / UEFI fw settings, but it is not going to make things so fast that, say, programs load in half the time or anything like that. You;re perfectly fine in keeping it running at the lowest JEDEC timing as that will put a (slightly) less wear and tear on your computer.

For reference, here is my ss similar to yours:

222.png

And here it is with the Memory tab selected in CPU-Z

223.png

As you can see, in this case, both TM and CPU-Z agree that my RAM is actually operating at (or, close to, really, not exactly) 3600 MHz clock speeds.

That all being said, matching the exact modules is helpful, and if you can buy a set of RAM sticks matched directly from the manufacturer, it makes things a lot easier to deal with. However, as @bobkn mentioned, you can always force the match in your BIOS / UEFI fw settings, although a safe bet is to get slightly faster RAM than you have (as in the minimal timings for the RAM is equal to or greater than the minimal timings for your existing stick, which is that first 1466 column), as everything will be forced to run at your original RAM stick's timings.

Again, though, to prevent any headaches, and particularly if you're not very tech savvy, it's better to buy a factory-matched set for the best performance. RAM prices being what they are, though, that might be hard to do. But your original idea to have more RAM for SolidWorks is a good one - if you can do more than 32, it may benefit from that as well.

Hope all this helped in understanding what you were seeing better.

And here it is with the Memory tab selected in CPU-Z

Not related but 128gb ram? Wow. What's the most you've seen in use at any one time?
