Win 10
Hope everyone doing well.

Please help clarify couple of my queries wrt Win 11 :)
  1. Win 11 is slated to roll out from Oct 5 this year. I am not signed into Windows Insider Programme, so does it apply to me as well?
  2. Will it be made available via Windows Update?
  3. Assuming response to 2 is yes, will my installed progs and local files be retained post the update to Win 11?
Thanks!

Yes, Win 11 will be available for general release from Oct 5th, on eligible machines.
Windows users of eligible machines will be offered an upgrade to the new OS via Windows update.
An upgrade should not affect installed programs and user data. Some of the Microsoft Apps may change, for example the Photo App and Snip and Sketch.

Whilst upgrades "should not" create issues, it is ALWAYS a good practice to backup your system before undertaking any upgrade. That way if things go pear shape you can restore the backup and have not lost anything except time, but saved yourself a lot of grief. :)

While it would be reasonable to wait for 5 October and do not download the last RC (the release version may be the same but may be changed too), right now you can check PC for compatibility using the last PC Health Check app and fix any possible problem, so you will know that you are finally prepared. Especially pay attention to TPM 2.0 and secure boot, both of them aren't needed for Windows 10 but required for 11.

The October 5th date is specifically the date when PC's and laptops will become available preinstalled with Windows 11, and you should also be able to purchase copies from microsoft and/or via the usual outlets. The roll out through Windows update will be staggered starting with those in the insider groups full ramp up to general availability is planned for January 2022 onwards.

The RTM has already been offered to some Release Preview Insider members through Windows update. Copies are also available via the RP channel of the Insiders it's Build Ref. 22000.194 from the Beta channel but may be renumbered for General Availability

... pay attention to TPM 2.0 and secure boot, both of them aren't needed for Windows 10 but required for 11.
The requirement that most systems are failing the compatibility test on, is not the TPM or Secure boot as these have been installed / available for a number of years - Mostly via On-Chip solutions PTT for Intel and fTPM for AMD systems. the failure point is mostly the Generation 8 and higher requirement for Intel processors and the equivalent for AMD Rysen.

if you do not meet the requirements you will be warned by the installer, but not prevented from installing. However, the OS in this circumstance will be unsupported by Microsoft, which may mean no updates of any sort including security ones.

Windows 10 remains supported fully until 2025 for those who fail the checks and do not fancy taking a chance

Yep, I tried to hook the SMBIOS but seems that is read-only memory - I think the only way to spoof the CPU would be a driver that loads before Windows does - but Secure-boot will kick that out pretty quickly .. hopefully someone more knowledgeable than myself will find a workaround (if/when MS closes the registry hack - which I assume was there only for OEM testing)
