RAM not showing full speed

So, I have 16GB of RAM. But Task Manager is only showing it as 2133MHz. . I enabled DOCP in my BIOS, but the system said "unstable" and would not let me boot past the MegaTrends screen. . Told me it Posted to safe mode and to press F1 to Enter Setup, so I put everything back as is. I'm not sure what I need to do in order to get 2400MHz, or if it would even make any difference, to be truthful. I am, however, considering getting 2 more RAM Sticks of the same exact ones and upgrading to 32GB. I didn't know if i was doing something wrong, of if my computer just can't run 2400MHz. . lol

That RAM isn't on the Asus QVL (qualified vendors list) for the board.

However, it's listed as supported by Gskill, assuming that the RX suffix isn't significant.

Seems like it should be OK. I don't know why the MB doesn't like the DOCP setting. You could try the EZ Tuning Wizard, to see whether that gives you something above 2133MHz.

Note that populating all 4 DIMM slots may strain things more. Some RAM that works at full specs as a pair may not do that as a set of 4. (Some can.) Maybe going to 2X16GB would work better. It may not cost more.

Can you recommend me 32GB of RAM? I don't wanna choose the wrong one. . LOL I'd like to have RGB RAM

Your motherboard is getting a bit old... it'll be harder and harder to find RAM that's in stock.
Your motherboard is X370 chipset... they're up to X670 now.



I have an ASUS X570 chipset motherboard. I couldn't get DOCP working either.
I had to "manually" set the RAM's frequency, timings and voltage.

Your motherboard (Crosshair VI Hero), is AM4 socket and DDR4 RAM.

You can get the RAM you have working properly, without DOCP.

maybe this one: CORSAIR Vengeance RGB RT 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) AMD Optimized Desktop Memory Model CMN32GX4M2Z3200C16 - Newegg.com

Corsair claims that it's intended for the 300 series chipset. It's actually DDR4 3200, which is supposed the be the performance sweet spot for DDR4. Whether your MB would run it at that, I don't know. It's not on the Asus QVL for your motherboard, but that doesn't mean that it won't work.

(Its latency is CL16. Not bad.)

You could save $15 by foregoing RGB.

The one at the top of the post appears to be the least expensive RGB type.

I'm currently using GSkill RAM, but Corsair is good, too. Corsair seems to have less of a tendency than GSkill to discontinue RAM for older motherboards.

It's DDR4 3800. Because of using all 4 DIMM slots, I had to back off the frequency manually to 3600MHz. No great loss.

Seems like it should be OK. I don't know why the MB doesn't like the DOCP setting. You could try the EZ Tuning Wizard, to see whether that gives you something above 2133MHz.

Note that populating all 4 DIMM slots may strain things more. Some RAM that works at full specs as a pair may not do that as a set of 4. (Some can.) Maybe going to 2X16GB would work better. It may not cost more.

The RX suffix is significant. The X signifies that it is optimized for the AMD platform. If you look at the non-X ("R" suffix) g.skill RAM, the board is not on the g.skill QVL list.

It's DDR4 3800. Because of using all 4 DIMM slots, I had to back off the frequency manually to 3600MHz. No great loss.

I would go with this. If you can push it to 3666 GHz @ a CAS of 14-14-14 you're doing better than me. At a flush 15 we'd be tied. That RAM is likely B-die with specs like that and definitely the sweet spot for DDR4. Personally, I take performance over bling so I got Team Group T-Force. Very happy with it. * EDIT * > My bad. I misread and assumed OP had the X570 board. HeroI < I own this board. with the VI you'd have to do some heavy down clocking to make this RAM work right, I suspect.

The free CPU-Z utility can give you the exact model and timings of your RAM. (At least, it does so for me.) Without pulling anything.

A little counter-intuitively, it's under the "SPD" tab.

I'm probably being too literal-minded, but I doubt that the DIMMs have serial numbers. Part numbers, yes.

We have very similar builds. Now that I took a closer look at your system I can't see why you couldn't do 3600 on DDR4 RAM (or even 3666 for that matter). You will have issues if you try to clock higher with unmatched RAM. IF < You plan on using all 4 slots on your board make sure all the RAM is identical. I'm also running 32 GB of system RAM on an 8 core CPU. Trident Z Ram can be good or it can be crappy depending on what you get. The RAM you are currently using likely won't clock to 3600 but there is definitely Trident Z Ram that will. The latency on the RAM you're currently using is good, but if you OC it you're likely to start losing latency fast. You want to try to keep that latency that you have while you increase your frequency. It's a bit of a trade off until you find that proverbial sweet spot. Buildzoid, on YouTube, can give you tips on how to do this. Some folks don't much care about how he rambles on but the kid is clever and he knows his RAM.

I don't care about Overclocking, to be truthful. I'm not gamer or anything like that. So the current RAM i have (F4-2400C15-8GTZR), You think I can get another two sticks of that exact same one, and be ok with 32GB while using all 4 slots?

I also have a 1st generation AMD X370 motherboard that I bought at launch in April 2017:

MBD: ASUS Prime X370-Pro
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700X
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) 2666 MHz

These motherboards were very picky with RAM at launch. I had to run my RAM at 2133MHz at first, then 2400MHz, and finally at 2666MHz after 6 months of BIOS updates. The best most people could do for a long time was 2933MHz. I don't know how much higher if at all they are doing now. Note I pre-ordered my motherboard and CPU in March 2017 before there were any QVL lists. I decided that 2666MHz was a safe bet since much higher might be a problem. I was right.

Things changed for me a couple years ago. I wanted to do an upgrade until I decided to build a new computer. I ordered a new CPU, RAM, and GPU. These are the CPU and RAM upgrades I made.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
RAM: G.SKILL Flare X Series 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3200 MHz

I knew the CPU would work but was uncertain about the RAM. None of the RAM configurators show any 3200MHz RAM for my motherboard. I took a chance on the G.SKILL Flare X RAM because it was supposed to work with AMD Ryzen motherboards. However, the RAM I bought the GSKILL F4-3200C16D-32GFX was supposed to require the X570 chipset. I installed this RAM and set DOCP.

I was a little nervous at first because when the computer first boots it has to do some training and might require one or more reboots. If the training fails the memory drops back to 2133MHz. When I checked the BIOS after the first reboot it was holding solid at DOCP and 3200MHz.

BTW, I figured that since the RAM controller is in the CPU then the Ryzen 3700X should be able to handle higher speed RAM than the Ryzen 1700X. I don't know if that is always true but at least things worked out. Now I could have tried maybe 3600MHz RAM but didn't want to push my luck with such an old motherboard.

I hear you. A lot of this has to do with what version of BIOS you're running. Often times the system board can only handle a limited number of brands and frequencies upon release but later, when the upgrades come, your options improve. This happened with a buddy of mine who had purchased the X470 and in some ways I sometimes think I might have been better off with that particular model. Perhaps one day I'll tackle the RAID 0/PCIe4 option that comes with the X570 but I'm in no rush atm. My hands are full.

I'm finding that 2666MHz is a good, stable frequency for most DDR4 RAM, both with Intel and AMD. I did have to train my RAM on the X570 to get it to 3666MHz. I'm thinking with proper cooling and overclocking I could likely even get it to go higher but 4.2 GHz on the CPU on stock cooling and 3666MHz on the RAM is fast enough for this old man —— especially with a 15-15-15 CAS latency. I can't praise this TEAM GROUP B-die RAM enough. Perhaps I just fluked out but the price was very reasonable at the time and I thought I'd give it a try as I didn't care to pay for LEDs on my RAM that would eventually burn out one day. I wanted no-nonsense performance and that's exactly what I got.

I went with the 8x4 option, which, technically, is risking slower speeds by running it over 4 DIMMS, but all's well that ends well and buying 8GB modules was certainly cheaper. It wouldn't surprise me at all if you could get that 3700X to handle 3600GHz. My 3800X handles it just fine and I know there have been BIOS updates since I got this CPU.

Anyway, this RAM worked out well for me and I like the discrete look of it.
