Personally I just don't like the way One Drive behaves. I'm sure it could be useful being able to access files anywhere from different computers. Tecnically I could do that by signing into my Idrive backup account if I needed to. I started uninstalling it years ago on low powered hardware (netbooks) because it slowed up the computer. I continue to uninstall it because I don't like the way it behaves and it fries my brain and turns me into a control freak

  In January 2025, this breach exposed data for over 62 million students and 10 million teachers, with 880,000 Texas residents confirmed to be affected.
Manpower breach:
A 2024 incident at a Michigan franchise that was disclosed in August 2025 exposed the personal information of 144,189 people, including Social Security numbers and driver's licenses.
Chinese Surveillance Network breach:
In June 2025, this breach exposed more than 4 billion records, including banking details and home addresses.
Salesforce/Salesloft Drift campaign:
This ongoing campaign may have exposed up to 1.5 billion records, affecting multiple organizations through the compromise of Salesloft Drift integrations used with Salesforce.

I have network drives on a NAS using RAID 10. I own the NAS, the drives, all is networked, secured, and with redundancy.

Judging by posts others have made in this forum, I'm not alone in this kind of thinking or setup.

And how does that give you real-time offsite storage, a requirement of a complete backup strategy?

I don’t understand why people are so scared of using Rufus to create install media.
Media has to be created one way or another.
Rufus creates install media, probably faster than other methods I have tried.

Uncheck the need for a Microsoft account when creating the media with Rufus.
The end, job done, no drama.
But of course, if complaining is ones preference, continue as you were.

I can name at least two reason right off the top of head. Not everybody knows how to do it and not everyone knows it can be done. If MS would give users choices such as for example, choosing the user name, deciding where they want their User files stored and whether they want to use Bitlocker or not when setting up a new system the MS account part wouldn't really be a problem.

I've been using Onedrive even before it was named Onedrive, used Skydrive for a while, then transititoned to using Onedrive.

My Ms account is secured with a really long password, updated every 3 months, stored in Roboform Password Manager

2 Factor is activated

All associated accounts passwords are updated at the same time--Gmail, Yahoo, Comcast.net email, all security updates and uefi bios updates that relate to security are installed as soon as possible.

and if i see a message on security breach, then i update passwords right away for everything

i might be a bit paranoid

Yup, I too started with SkyDrive some 18 years ago and a few years later renamed to OneDrive. Remember when it first started and there was no limit to how much you could store?

And if Paranoid = Careful, I too am a bit paranoid.

For me, too much of what MS does is "one size fits all" and choosing the defaults they want at install, rather than giving options. I'd rather spend more time on the install, then even more time after the install, on getting things the way I want them.

SkyDrive/OneDrive always was 15 GB and then at some point they reduced it to 5 GB. However after complaints they let people retain 15 GB if you used a certain link. All my MS Accounts are still at 15 GB.
If you do not use the OneDrive part of the Account after a certain time the One Drive it is frozen and then deleted, even if you are still using the Email part of the Account see the MS Account T&C for details.

I remember Skydrive and also remember all the advice to uninstall it for security reasons and because it caused a lot of issues!

i Kept it installed, and made sure i had a very strong password even back then. as i always done in my PC usage---though i'll did forget passwords somewhat more 18 years ago than i do now lol.
