In the last two weeks, both for myself and two other local residents, the non-essential icons, i.e. those other than Word, Excel, etc. have suddenly disappeared from our Taskbars.
Is this the result of an Update ??

Nothing disappeared for me and I am current on updates. on the release channel. However, you may be installing preview updates while I do not.
Also you may be running some 3rd party app that affects the GUI while I do not. We don't know all that stuff unless you tell us.

I have experienced that very issue on Canary branch only during 2 successive installations.
Code:
Folder: %appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
Content of folder listed above was untouched so it was easy to pin apps back.
I have not experienced it on other branches.

You mean that several people (i.e. "other local residents") had essentially the same set of icons pinned to their task bars, and the same icons disappeared for all of them, independently? BTW, how did it happen that different people had the same pins on the task bar? Were the systems initially configured by the same person?

Given the number of Windows users world wide there' a good chance a few of those people have coincidentally configured their machines in an almost identical manner. Either way it's irrelevant as they are all suffering the same issue.

True. For "Windows users world wide" the chances are very high. However, there's very little chance a group of "local residents" would just accidentally configure their machines in identical manner. And in this topic we are dealing specifically with such "local residents", not with "Windows users world wide".

Either way it's irrelevant as they are all suffering the same issue.
If I asked it, it is relevant - that's the rule here. However, the essence of my question is, of course: which specific icons got unpinned? That's what we really expect to hear in response to my "how did it happen".
