You are confusing two different things.

This iso does not load the wim in efi mode, it hangs on the "press any key.." message till it times out

Of course yes, but when I start the Deployment and Imaging Tools Environment as an administrator like explained in the docs from Microsoft and I run the following command to create my iso file:
MakeWinPEMedia /ISO C:\WinPE_amd64 "C:\WinPE_amd64\DiskGenius 5.5.1.1508 x64.iso"
...then the root inside the resulting iso file already has the bootmgr.efi in it so, I still fail to see the problem about that part.

I wonder why it wouldn't boot in normal mode since it was based on the Macrium iso which does?

I don't know what is happening on your system.

without using ctrl+w

if it is an iso it loads using bootmgr.efi which is on the root of the iso

if it is a wim on the usb it loads using bootx64.efi. Looks like the ventoy one will work fine.

There are several other ways to access lots of different programs from one booted winpe.

One way is to copy and paste the c:\program files\diskgenius folder onto the usb stick. Then after booting into e.g macrium winpe, use the quasi explorer to reach down to the usb stick and run diskgenius\disgenius.exe.

could do the same sort of thing with firefox browser and plenty more programs.

If there isnt a quasi explorer in whatever winpe you have booted into, can browse to the programs on the usb stick with notepad instead.

If your winpe is 64 bit, you can only run 64 bit programs that way.

I do this all the time, in a slightly more elaborate fashion. I usually include wow support and explorer etc in my winpe, then it links the programs on the usb stick to the winpe desktop.

It is handy to have them on the usb stick because it is easy to add extra programs, or change them for newer versions.

Thank you this is just what i needed to convert a rufus boot usb of windows 11 24h2 with all the checks removed back to an iso for ventoy. worked liked a charm. imgburn and anyburn would not make the iso bootable no matter what i tried. you rock.

I have made one which is just a simple .cmd file and doesnt look for setup.exe

Copy and paste the usb stick to a hard drive. Then run the .cmd file and browse to directory you just copied.
