Registry Cleaner App?

Win 11 v. 24H2

Following removal of Photoshop using the remove function on the "Installed Apps" page I still have an uncountable number of photoshop references in the Registry. Is there an App that will automatically remove all references to programs that are no longer installed?

For future reference use REVO Uninstaller then all the dregs will get cleared up as well.

The Free Version doesn't clean the Registry - does the paid version? I don't see any mention of the Registry in the upgrade to paid notes.

In the past I've tried REVO a number of times and always had issues getting it to actually initiate the apps install program. Has that been improved?

There are so many conditions, caveats, notes, etc. that on the one hand I'm reluctant to try it, but on the other hand I don't care if it causes problems with the program because I've already uninstalled it.

Have you ever tried it for removing adobe stuff from the Registry?

Registry cleaners are controversial.

I've used the free version of CCleaner for years. Recent versions have hidden the Registry cleaner under "tools". It has never caused me any harm. It also allows you to save deleted Registry keys should you need to re-install them. (I've never needed to.)

One warning: if you try CCleaner, the installer may try to add the Avast antivirus program. (Avast bought CCleaner a while back.) If you don't want Avast, be sure to decline.

You're right - it does clean the registry. But, I had to close the program and restart it first. Following Restart I got a screen similar to yours, I went to the Tools section and found it.

I had already found it before your post appeared. I appreciate the caveats; it DID try to install Avast - and I agree, I don't want it!

For removing unwanted programs, there are several good uninstallers including REVO Uninstaller, Geek Uninstaller, Bulk Crap Uninstaller, and more.

As for registry cleaners, I highly recommend you do NOT "clean the registry". It does nothing to enhance performance nor remove uninstalled programs. There are far more reports of issues with Windows after running then than there is reports of improved performance. Unless you know the ins and outs of the registry and exactly which hives need to be cleaned, it is best to leave it alone.

Note: I use one, but I can't prove that it improves the performance of Windows at all. It's mostly a form of compulsiveness.

This removes everything including what is in the registry, if you are worried there might still be leftovers, you could do a scan with Revo afterwards as previously suggested, but the link I gave you is the official tool. Also yes, I have used it on at least half-dozen separate occasions.

I've been staffing support forums since the very early 2000's and I can tell you with 100% certainty that Registry Cleaners can cause harm. Over the years I've helped users who had their systems significantly harmed by the use of registry cleaners - and some were damaged beyond simple repair and had to go through the process of a clean Windows re-installation. Is it possible that there are some registry cleaners that are relatively benign and won't cause much, if any, harm these days? Sure. But none of them - NONE OF THEM - do one iota of good. Registry cleaners serve absolutely no purpose and may very well cause major headaches. If you want to use one, you do so at your own risk (and without the possibility of any potential benefit).

re: Reg Cleaners: I do not use them to enhance performance and I realize they are controversial. I uninstalled my current Photoshop for a different version. When I tried to install the different version it responded that I had to first uninstall the current program. I did, and once again it told me to first uninstall Photoshop. I found some Photoshop stuff in the Adobe folder and deleted that. Same response trying to install new version.

There were too many references to count present in the Registry. CCleaner has moved many of them, but same issue with installing Photoshop remains...

In regard to Adobe specifically, there are conditions where if it has previously been installed and its not been completely cleaned out, it can interfere with any future re-install, which is why they created an uninstall tool... To get rid of residual junk.

I've used ccleaner in aggessive mode for over a decade and it has never caused any problems. To say they do no good is not my experience. They can improve boot times. If your system is very fast, you may not see this.
