Hi guys, I'm sure there's a simple solution for this.
Back in August, my Win 11 ThinkPad was telling me I needed to update to KB5016629, even though it was listed as successfully installed, in Update History, 8.9.22.

I just ignored it, well no I didn't, I came on here, saw some advice and followed it, that didn't help, then I ignored it.

A month later, I seem to have a related issue. Now it wants to install KB5017328, although it appears to have installed it on 9.19.22.

Isn't there some simple solution, I delete my Update History or something?

Thanks in advance for any and all support :-) :p :(

Update:

I followed the link from Update History, took me to:

[September 13, 2022—KB5017328 (OS Build 22000.978)](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/september-13-2022-kb5017328-os-build-22000-978-40843fca-a0be-4a60-b68b-6cb23a73a5aa)

Manually downloaded KB5017328 and attempted to install, but it again failed :(

And yet Windows is still trying to install an update. Even though it appears to have been installed twice, it wants to install it again!?!

Thank you @Cromax , I knew it was something like that :-)

Doesn't that mean I'll lose something though, does it 'reset' something, or change some other settings?

I'll run a quick Macrium Image backup first :-)

It cleans WinSxS folder with system files so that it uses latest updated one file when checking sometimes it has multiple ones so the stay on old versions and windows and windows update gets confused

After you execute DISM /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase command, you will not have option to uninstall Windows update you have installed.

I followed @Cromax advice after I created a Macrium Image, all went well enough.

Except I'm exactly where I was before. It's still telling me I need to install an update???

I ran sfc /scannow before and after with clean results both times.

As I have KB5017328 installed, should I just forget about the confusion and just move on (I still have the System Update notification in the System Tray informing I am missing important updates though). I'm inclined to just ignore it for a bit?

Use Windows Update Troubleshooter.

  • Right-click on Start button and pick Settings
  • Go to System > Troubleshoot
  • Click on Other Troubleshooters > Windows Update and click Run button.

Resetting the Windows Update components can usually solve these types of issues.

Thanks @Cromax @FreeBooter

I ran the troubleshooter a couple of times with reboots, that didn't help. Then I followed Brink's instructions to Reset Windows Update, and it appears to have moved on to another update that it won't install:

1663773337014.png

Even though KB5017328 was already installed:

I've had it I think, I'll just leave it till next month's update, I've done my backup image after all.

Unless anyone has a further suggestion, I think I'll just sit on it. Thanks to @Cromax and @FreeBooter :-)
