Solved Restart option not working.

Recently i upgraded my BIOS. and the restart fucntion no longer works on windows 11, i had to manually press the Power button on my PC to make it boot again.

when i restart its just black screen.

Was there a reason you upgraded your BIOS? and just where did you get the upgrade?

From the official gigabyte website, and yeah i needed to update since i was having issues with some USB functions etc

Was gigabyte the Mfg of your laptop if so have you tried contacting them?

Its a PC, and i havent yet. This wasn't an issue before i updated so im guessing its a firmware issue. so i might downgrade bios i guess...

I feel you are correct and it's not like a program that is installed that you can just remove it.
My older ASUS came with a full set of recovery disks, today we don't get them.
This is sure not a simple item to deal with.

Power down the machine, remove the mains plug from the power supply, wait 2 minutes then remove the BIOS battery, power up the machine, reconfigure BIOS if need be, sign in, now try to power off using the windows shutdown function.

What is the make (Gigabyte)/model of your motherboard?
There's about 20 different Gigabyte Z790 motherboards.

Check this setting in the BIOS... it determines what the Restart button on your case does...
I understand this is NOT the problem... but this is the "only" BIOS setting I see that's at all related to restarting the computer.

As for the "black screen"... the BIOS upgrade shouldn't have affected that, at all.
We also just had a Windows Update, 4 days ago.
I would think that your problem would be more of a Windows problem, than a BIOS issue.

I would start by running these commands (one at a time) in an elevated Command Prompt...

sfc /scannow

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

My guess is the XMP, its unstable. but why does it only affects when im restarting from desktop, when cold boot its fine. thats a weird issue. unless its a windows issue.

I don't know. Sometimes, just re-seating the RAM will fix a black screen issue, BUT...
that's when you have black screen at ALL times... not just on Restart.

On my motherboard the XMP is called DOCP or something, and when that is turned ON... my RAM causes tons of problems.
I had to manually set my RAM frequency, timings and voltage to manufacturer's specs, and disable DOCP.

This is MY RAM showing in CPU-Z...

I noted the settings in the XMP column on the SPD tab in CPU-Z... then entered the BIOS, and disabled DOCP, and manually set my RAM as shown on the Memory tab in CPU-Z.

For MY RAM, I set the frequency to 3200Mhz, the voltage to 1.35v and the timings as follows...

Then, the problems caused by my RAM, went away.
On some motherboards, leaving the RAM set to XMP or DOCP (namely, set to Auto), causes problems.
Setting the RAM manually, in these cases, usually fixes things.

XMP = Extreme Memory Profile
DOCP (ASUS term) = Direct Overclocking Profile.

Both do the same thing for all intents and purposes.

Run those commands in post #10 first. See if they find or fix anything.
If it is a Windows problem... they may fix it.

No matter what the settings in the BIOS... if the RAM is running at manufacturer's specs, then I wouldn't think it's the cause of the problem.

Also, when you get a chance... in the Taskbar search box, type: winver and post the version of Windows that you are running...

Just did. sfc found nothing and the DISM succesfully completed.

try to force reboot from within windows and see if it does. if not, something is bugged in the os.

shutdown -r -t 00

This worked, i was afraid my keyboard wouldn't light up. this command worked. im kinda scared to reboot from the start menu lol

how bad do you want the start button restart option to work? lol. create a batch > open notepad > paste the above command > file > save as > choose all from the dropdown types > name it Restart.bat > right click the batch > create shortcut > right click shortcut > properties > shortcut tab > in the "Target box", add "cmd.exe /C " before the existing text. now you can double click it and restart. this shortcut will allow you to pin it to start, taskbar, assign an icon, etc.

Any other way? instead of this method. Start menu restart doesn't really work. only the command prompt works.
