This tutorial will show you how to restore the Windows Photo Viewer app to have available to select in Default apps and Open with for your account or all users in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Windows Photo Viewer is a basic lightweight image viewer program that was included in Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Windows Photo Viewer allows you to access the properties of an image, print the image, email the image, burn the image to disc, delete image, copy image, rotate image, manually scroll between previous and next images in a folder, and play a slide show of images from within a folder.

Windows Photo Viewer was hidden and replaced by the more modern Photos app in Windows 8/8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11.

If you like, you can restore having the Windows Photo Viewer app available to select to open supported image files with by default or just once.

There isn't an executable file for Windows Photo Viewer. Instead, Windows Photo Viewer uses the "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll" file.

If you wanted to create a shortcut or run a command to directly open a specific image file with Windows Photo Viewer, you can use the command below without having to restore Windows Photo Viewer.

rundll32 "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll", ImageView_Fullscreen <full path of image file with extension>

For example: rundll32 "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll", ImageView_Fullscreen C:\Users\Brink\Pictures\alien_shush.png

4 Save the REG file to your desktop.

5 If you have Smart App Control turned on, you will need to unblock the downloaded REG file.

6 Double click/tap on the downloaded REG file to merge it.

7 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

8 You can now delete the downloaded REG file if you like.

5 If you have Smart App Control turned on, you will need to unblock the downloaded REG file.

I've been running the much faster to open old app for years - but a mate that sends photos by one device never open
If I save the file to the PC it magically opens - but I'm not doing that for the hell of it - note all get sent via the same gmail email account

My PC Win 11 26.200.7840 has 32 gig of ram and 100gig of drive space - to me its some magic that device must embed in the picture ?
All my PCs have this exact behaviour with Win 11 or Win 10 I'd say going all the way back from then till now for more than 5 years

It's set to be managed by the system, so it should auto-size as needed.

I can only assume that there may be a security issue blocking the images from being opened from the original location, but allows it to be opened when saved to your local PC.

thanks for the ideas,

tried the colorcpl thing - no change (had ticked the tickbox "use my settings for this device" )

fiddled about with file associations - paint and photos opens that .jpg no issues - was about to try with a photo editor (picture window pro) that also showed in the list - updated that, rebooted and now that choice has vanished...

rebooted still gone - fiddled about trying to open (from the email again) and when clicking, it opened in the body of the email (as a preview) don't think that ever did so before ???

on the properties - advanced thing - Encryption was unchecked...
under general tab Attributes - it had the info this came from another computer - So I ticked Unblock - It still won't open - but the tick-box option then disappears too

Search "ICC_PROFILE" (2 hits in 1 file of 1 searched) [Normal]
C:\Users\xxxx\Desktop\20260129_105914.jpg (2 hits - amongst large lines of gobbledygook)

modifying that Metadata makes it work - note oddly saved on desktop the original doesn't open (so maybe once saved previously I was opening using another programme and had forgotten that)
