Solved Restoring Macrium Reflect Windows Image to SSD partition instead of whole disk.

Hello, I just made the image backup of my Windows OS and now I want to move it to another SSD.

I have a data on one partition and one partition is free. I want to restore the Image to the free partition.

All the software I have tried are giving the option to select whole disk when selecting the target disk.

Is there an option of restore the image to a particular partition only?

Is this what you’re looking for? I don’t use Macrium but it seems it is giving you an option here.


However my experience with restoring images is that it totally wipes the drive and replaces what it got from where it got it from and recreates the original source structure of the drive. Again, I don’t use Macrium.

When you make an image of Windows using Macrium you should back up ALL the system partitions, not just the C: partition. When restoring an image, you restore all partitions necessary for windows to work. To restore the image drag and drop each partition from the image file into unallocated space on target drive, resizing as needed per the article @antspants referred to.

Thanks for the reply. Wiping the drive thing is what I am worried about.

Thanks for reply, glass. I have backed up all the related partitions and will be restoring all of them. I think one mistake I was doing was I have created a separate partition for the unallocated space. Will try to keep unallocated and move the backed-up partitions to that.

If windows won't boot after image restoral, you may have to use "Fix Boot Problems" from within Macrium recovery.

FYI, You can handle any/all existing partitions on the disk from within Macrium simply by selecting the option 'delete partition' during a restore process. After the initial restore that builds your desired partitioning scheme to a particular disk, it will not be necessary to delete partitions to make space unallocated on the target drive because all the involved partitions will have the same structure (ie size, order,etc) as that of your image.. If ever you have to restore an image in the future, it's just a matter of dragging the partitions from the image onto their corresponding partitions on the target drive. The Resize and Reorder is used only on your initial recovery to a new target disk OR if you need to resize partitions in a future image restoral.

The destination disk should have the unallocated space so that the source partition can be moved to the destination disk.
