I found an entry in the Setup log from 2/25/2025 that showed the package that would have installed KB5035942 failed (see attached). Shortly after, my problem with KB5035942 installing every day started. It CONTINUES to run EVERY DAY!!! However, I cannot find ANY entry in the logs that say KB5035942 has run, yet it messes up my applications every day.

Can the install failure back in February set some kind of 'external trigger' somewhere, say Microsoft, that says 'OK there was a failure, run this until it installs'? It seems to me that this is being set off externally for some reason. Please, someone help stop this nightmare.

Try running "Dism /Online /CleanUp-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore" with an elivated command prompt.

If it says you have 2 unreclaimable packages, it might be worth running Bree's rollout fix. Mine was trying to update everyday, it's a common thing, but now mine just remains listed under other updates.

Found in this thread How-to-remove-the-two-un-reclaimable-that-always-show-in-dism

It fixed them for me! (y)

Thanks for your help!! Ran the DISM commands and went from 7 reclaimable packages to 0 reclaimable packages. Before I close this thread, I will wait until tomorrow morning to see if KB5035942 runs again (apparently runs sometime during the night). I will return then but thanks very much for your help. See you tomorrow.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
I will wait until tomorrow morning to see if KB5035942 runs again

If it’s still happening, you could try resetting Windows Update.

Tried resetting Windows update through the .bat file procedure and it failed because Norton Security would not allow the cryptographic services to shut down. Any ideas on how to shut it down without uninstalling Norton?

You might want to run Windows update and see if it solves any issues.
Todays 24H2 updates:

Short of that working; I would highly recommend a Repair Install In-Place Upgrade:

After all that, KB503594 still ran this morning. Where is the trigger on this? Nothing is displayed in any log showing that it ran. I have done the repair install Windows 11 twice and KB503594 still runs. Will try installing the two updates and see what happens.

KB 5054979 was already installed. Updated with KB5055523. Now we wait until tomorrow morning.

I'd been having the same kind of problem (different CU, otherwise same behavior). After the Patch Tuesday updates came out yesterday, I ran Settings > System > Recovery > Reinstall now (built-in in-place update repair install) and it fixed the issue. Now on Build 26100.3775. I did, however, have to run Bree's DISM command to get those 2 spurious reclaimables back out of WinSxS. Sigh.

Ran Bree's DISM and got 0 reclaimable packages after clean up (there was 1 before the clean up). Won't the reinstall delete all apps, etc? I would rather reinstall an ISO where I can keep all my apps. Essentially the same thing isn't it?

@Bree: I've got 4 spurious reclaimables showing up in Windows 11 Build 26100.3915. They don't show the behavioral pattern of being superseded and feature pack items. Instead, I've got over 50 superseded packages, and over 60 staged packages in WinSxS. Not sure how to clean this up, so I'm running an in-place upgrade repair install. What do you think?

That's a lot of packages. I don't think I've ever seen that many in the 26100 General Availability channel. When I first started seeing these, years ago in the Beta builds, an in-place upgrade would make them go away. But they had a habit of reappearing after the next cumulative update.

My 26100.3915 has zero. There were two originally, but got rid of them both while on build 26100.2033 by uninstalling just one package. There have been two CUs since then and they haven't returned.

Bree said:
I have found that if I uninstall just the Package_for_RollupFix~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~26100.1742.1.10 package, in doing so the Microsoft-Windows-FodMetadataServicing-Desktop-Metadata-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.26100.1742 package gets removed at the same time.

If you haven't yet removed your Package_for_RollupFix~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~26100.1742.1.10 package then try doing so. It seems to be some sort of 'composite' package with more that just the one package in it.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

For some reason, KB5035349 and KB5035942 ran in the early morning of 4/18/25. KB5035942 hasn't been an issue since then. Hopefully, this is the last I'll see of it. Thanks for all your help.

I'm running an in-place upgrade repair install. What do you think?
That will reinstate the Package_for_RollupFix~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~26100.1742.1.10. You'll always have two uninstallable packages unless you remove that package.

After my last post I discovered that one of my VMs of 26100.3915 had 11 unreclaimable packages. So I tried the 'Fix problems with Windows Update' reinstall. Arter a cleanup it was down to 2 unreclaimable packages, and removing the 1742 RollupFix brought it down to zero. We'll see after the next PT CU if it stays fixed.... :crossed

@Bree: You are absolutely correct. And here's one for the record books: after the recent update in the Beta channel to Build 26120.3984 I had 44 (!) reclaimable packages after running dism ... /analyzecomponentstore. Upon subsequently running dism ... /startcomponentcleanup, that number dropped to 0 (zero). Cheers!
