Go to open a Favorite.

Right click on it and select "open in new tab".

The option is now grayed out.

I know that most people don't use Edge, but I prefer its interface.

This is strange. I hadn't noticed it not working from the favorites menu because I rarely use it. I work from folders on the favorites bar. It makes no sense but right click and open in new tab does still work there. However, it won't switch focus to that tab but it never has since MS took that option away.

If I open the favorites list and right click on a link, it is grayed out.

But I noticed something else, too. I have my middle mouse button programmed with {Ctrl}{LMB} (Thats Control key +left mouse button.) That middle button was programmed to compensate when MS removed the option in Edge to set links to open in new tab and switch focus. The same goes for Firefox. Using FF, I could click on a link just with middle button, it opens link in new tab and switch focus to it. However, in Edge I had to SHIFT+middle mouse button to get the same behavior when clicking on any link, anywhere. This method is still working no matter where I click on a link, including the favorites list..

It's only working from the context menu method that seems to be screwed up.

If you make the favourites bar visible then this isn't a problem for some reason. This seems to be a design choice - odd maybe - rather than a bug.

Thank you @Almighty. Your answer rang my bell and made me realize that I wasn't paylng close attention in my testing where I thought adding Shift +middle button programmed as CTRL+LMB was opening in a new tab and shifting focus to is actually opening a new window and shifting focus to it. So I will correct my earlier post. This same behavior happens when I do not use the middle button at all.

So I've spent an half an hour hour checking all this and verifying I wrote it down correctly this time, and folks, MS has screwed the pooch bigtime on this one. I don't know how users are expected to know what result they witll get depending on where they are working from. Using only the left right mouse buttons for testing, here's what I found.

The way Edge handles links has never made sense to me. so to keep my mind straight I re-wrote that little chart I posted earlier. If anyone is interested this new chart tells you what reaction we will get after the latest Edge update when we use our mouse button alone and with other control keyboard keys.
The result is different depending on where in the Edge interface you click. Has no rhyme or reason to it at all. You have to scroll to see it all.
I don't know why it uploaded so large. I messed up somewhere.
