Safe mode start from BOOT menu

I suddenly lost ability to start windows from BOOT menu.
I have a BOOT menu to chose between normal windows and Insider Dev on another disk. Normally choosing each by pressing F5 or F8 buttons it would boot to safe mode but it doesn't now. F5 doesn't do anything and F8 starts in normal mode. Restarting from Windows (Shift + Restart) works properly. From command prompt too. Fast start in BIOS and fast BOOT are disabled. Next week I'm going to upgrade PC to new platform including MB, CPU and RAM so it's important to be able to do first BOOT in Safe mode.with networking.
I know I could make new BOOT entry for both in Msconfig but would like to get back to default behavior.

Use EasyBCD to rebuild your Boot Menu.

On the Advanced Settings tab, you can select an entry in the boot menu and elect to boot into Safe Mode etc. on the Advanced tab under Change Settings.

Tnx,I know that and used EasyBCD to make the menu but that's permanent until changed again. I need old behavior back.

If you want the old behaviour back, then rebuild your boot menu, something is messed up in your current boot menu. Doing so should restore the default behaviour.

As I pointed out though, you can add additional menu items that will boot into safe mode w/networking for example.

Your Boot Menu might look something like this:

Windows 11
Windows 11 Safe Mode W/Net
Insider Dev
Insider Dev Safe Mode W/Net

No need to press F5 or F8, it will be right there for you, just select the appropriate entry.

It all depends on how you want to configure things.

You can get the old (black) boot menu back with the command bcdedit /set {id} bootmenupolicy legacy. Run as admin. To see the id in the {} just run bcdedit without any parameters.

I assume that was the issue.

Somethings hosed up then -- just try re-installing the boot menu using the windows installmedia (repair system -->command mode). In Diskpart assign the efi partition to say S. exit disk part. Then run bcdedit and delete the boot entry that is giving trouble and recreate again with bcdboot. Boot the system -- if it comes up with the blue screen then run the command again to get the legacy system back.
