Samsung 990 Pro SSD rapid health drops

  • Staff
UPDATE:

Hello everyone, we have received feedback from our technicians on this:

Samsung is currently reviewing customer inquiries about anomalies related to the SMART Percentage Used (on Samsung Magician) and/or Health Status (on Crystal Disk Info) of the Samsung SSD 990 PRO.

We were able to recreate the error under certain conditions of use.
To fix the problem, Samsung is expected to release a firmware update in February.

When you buy the fastest flagship SSD on the market, you expect a certain level of reliability and confidence from its performance, but things can and do go wrong sometimes, and customer support is paramount at instilling continued confidence in the brand. This has typically been the case for past Samsung drives, actually, even the non-flagship models have been highly reliable and perform excellently with very few that I have seen needing an RMA.

Colour me with sadness when within just a couple of days of buying the 990 Pro 2TB, I noticed that the drive health according to SMART data from both Samsung Magician and third party tools had dropped to 99%. For the record I have other Samsung SSDs with over 40TB written and still at 99% health 1.5 years later, so I knew this was not normal.

Within another day or so it had dropped to 98%, by this point I'd not even written 2TB to the drive. Fast forward a couple more days and the drive health was sitting at 95%

Update - 2023.01.23
Looking at comments on the linked forums and social media, there are more people coming forward with the same issue after checking their drives. A reader on Twitter has also shared that his 990 Pro has dropped to 64% with only 2TB being written.

Update 2 - 2023.01.23
Samsung's RMA division, Hanaro, have reached out and offered to A) Replace this SSD, and B) Try to replicate the problem. Quite why both of these options were not on the table before the issue became public is a mystery. We still request that readers continue to share their 990 Pro drive health stats and what region of the world they are in so that a better overall picture can be drawn of what appears to be a potentially developing situation.

Update - 2023.01.24
More owners of the 990 Pro have come forward reporting degraded health reporting in another reddit thread, this time in the r/hardware subreddit.

Resetting to factory defaults won't (Shouldn't?) change the amount of host writes, as the drive has already been used that much. Only physically changing the all the cells in the drive or changing the controller would reset the figure. It's like the mileage on a digital speedo - changing the car's engine doesn't mean it hasn't done thousands of miles already.

I set mine to not run at Windows startup. And when I'm done with it I r-click it's icon and select Exit. If its not running its not writing.

Did a quick search , seems others are experiencing the same health drop issue ...

There are multiple other articles on other sites also , but the bottom line is that it looks as though Samsung is outright refusing replacements and denying the warranty .... LOL

If that is the way they are gonna play it , replace your drive with another from another company with better ethics, when the new drive is installed , take a hammer to the Samsung and never buy another thing from them.
I think people are getting riled up about nothing. The warranty says this:
990 PRO
1TB - 5 years or 600 TB TBW
2TB - 5 years or 1,200 TB TBW
Samsung will only honor a warrant claim if the SSD fails, the usage is less than 100%, and it is less than 5 years old. Period.
For example, a 1TB 990 Pro has 100% usage when it has written 600 TB.

I bet most other SSD manufacturers have similar warranties.

BTW, I have an Intel 670p. Its warranty is not as good:
1TB - 5 years or 370 TB TBW

I wouldn't worry about that number. I have two Samsung 980s I bought only two months ago. In Samsung Magician the percentages used on both of them shows 5% also. However, DiskInfo shows 100% health for both of them.
IIRC the raw value may be the number of full erase cycles, not the actual percent. Forget how many erase cycles per percent. It does depend on the type of NAND used. I think it is something like 10-20 per %.

I don't use my drive a whole lot, (WD SN850) it's 2 years old, and about 16TB written. Still 100%

Interesting.

My trio of 980 NVMe 2TB drives show 99% / 100% / 99%, and are coming up on a year old in the next month or two.

My system drive is installed in the mobo slot that is not under the GPU, and runs significantly cooler (10°+ C) than the other two NVMe drives which are under the GPU.

And Samsung magician shows the exact same info as CrystalDiskInfo (as it should, since it's reading the info from the drives itself).

Since the data is stored on the drive itself, I wonder if there is some sort of an algorithm issue in the firmware for those drives when it writes SMART info to the disk....

I found that Magician was causing disk access to be slow when gaming, it seemed to be hogging the controller. When there's a firmware update for the drives I'll install it, do the update then uninstall again

why not just disable the service. then enable it again when you want it. That is what I have been doing

I have set the service to manual only, and then just end it after I'm done running SM, so it doesn't run in the background.

I found that Magician was causing disk access to be slow when gaming, it seemed to be hogging the controller. When there's a firmware update for the drives I'll install it, do the update then uninstall again

It does provide an easy way to update the firmware, for one thing. So I keep it around, just not running 99% of the time.

New "Samsung Magician" out today, version 7.2.1 ... will check later if it makes any difference to my 990Pro and its rapid degradation (99% with 3TB written) ...

I think people are getting riled up about nothing. The warranty says this:

Samsung will only honor a warrant claim if the SSD fails, the usage is less than 100%, and it is less than 5 years old. Period.
For example, a 1TB 990 Pro has 100% usage when it has written 600 TB.

I bet most other SSD manufacturers have similar warranties.

BTW, I have an Intel 670p. Its warranty is not as good:
1TB - 5 years or 370 TB TBW
Seagate Firecuda 530 offer twice the warranty i.e.: 5,100 TBW for the 4TB and 2,550 TBW for the 2TB versions respectively.

Shows how well Samsung customer services and Warranty handling agents are trained technically. ... and they have not changed the car's engine but only restarted it.
