Samsung 990 Pro SSD rapid health drops

Hello everyone, we have received feedback from our technicians on this:

Samsung is currently reviewing customer inquiries about anomalies related to the SMART Percentage Used (on Samsung Magician) and/or Health Status (on Crystal Disk Info) of the Samsung SSD 990 PRO.

We were able to recreate the error under certain conditions of use.
To fix the problem, Samsung is expected to release a firmware update in February.

When you buy the fastest flagship SSD on the market, you expect a certain level of reliability and confidence from its performance, but things can and do go wrong sometimes, and customer support is paramount at instilling continued confidence in the brand. This has typically been the case for past Samsung drives, actually, even the non-flagship models have been highly reliable and perform excellently with very few that I have seen needing an RMA.

Colour me with sadness when within just a couple of days of buying the 990 Pro 2TB, I noticed that the drive health according to SMART data from both Samsung Magician and third party tools had dropped to 99%. For the record I have other Samsung SSDs with over 40TB written and still at 99% health 1.5 years later, so I knew this was not normal.

Within another day or so it had dropped to 98%, by this point I'd not even written 2TB to the drive. Fast forward a couple more days and the drive health was sitting at 95%

Looking at comments on the linked forums and social media, there are more people coming forward with the same issue after checking their drives. A reader on Twitter has also shared that his 990 Pro has dropped to 64% with only 2TB being written.

Samsung's RMA division, Hanaro, have reached out and offered to A) Replace this SSD, and B) Try to replicate the problem. Quite why both of these options were not on the table before the issue became public is a mystery. We still request that readers continue to share their 990 Pro drive health stats and what region of the world they are in so that a better overall picture can be drawn of what appears to be a potentially developing situation.

Let's just hope it's just an error of the reporting itself rather than an actual representation of its longetivity.

So 6% used equals 94% health just like in the article you posted? And boy those 990's sure run a bit on the warm side.

That inspired me to check the usage of my WD Black SN850. It's almost 2 years old (Feb. 2020.). Usage is at 1%.

I wonder what's up with the Samsung? I hope it's fixable via a firmware update.

Purchased Feb 2021, used every day and has a lot of games installed on it. I've clean installed once and re-imaged, in-place upgraded Windows at least 10 times since then too.

I wouldn't worry about that number. I have two Samsung 980s I bought only two months ago. In Samsung Magician the percentages used on both of them shows 5% also. However, DiskInfo shows 100% health for both of them.

Personally I don't use Magician software, except when a firmware update is needed. I have read reports that it constantly writes to the disk which would wear it out quicker. Not sure where I saw the article

I set mine to not run at Windows startup. And when I'm done with it I r-click it's icon and select Exit. If its not running its not writing.

I only Open my Samsung Magician occasionally to check Drive Temp, or Write Amount or see if there is any updates available for the Program or Firmwires for the M.2 or Sata Samsung SSD

Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500GB 98 Percent, 27.6Tb written, 1 Clean Install when first got the Drive for Christmas 2020, Then a 2nd one prior to installing Windows 11 Clean October 6th 2021, then in place upgrade to 22H2, not another clean install as yet, but imagine at some point will do another possibly in the future

I had a Corsair MP500 installed for almost 5 years before it ever dropped below 98% . I recently installed a 1TB PCIe about a month ago and have done 700+ GB reads / 900 + GB writes to it with 448 hours in the powered on state and it still shows 100%

Seems to me either your Samsung is reporting the wrong values which is completely plausible or Samsung has an issues with their 990 series M.2's they are not willing to acknowledge, there is simply no way the health on a new ssd should have dropped so fast like that. I wonder if other 990 series users are having the same issue?

Oh no, that reminds me of my Crucial MX500 500 GB. That's a known problem in another forum, MX500s have percentage plunging to insane levels, and now, I doubt CrystalDiskInfo is wrong, when there's an alert from CrystalDiskInfo!

I suddenly got a slew of alerts from CrystalDiskInfo with my Crucial MX500 within months! It made my life estimate a measly no-more-than-5-years or a bit more than 5 years at the most, if not less than 5 years! High quality platter drives last longer than that, easily 10+ years!

have you tried installing the phison 1.5 driver and see if that changes the way smart data is picked up?

fernando at win raid has used the phison driver with his 990 because there is no samsung driver for it. As far as I know he didnt say anything about weird lifespan report. He might have been talking about the 980, cant remember exactly, but it might be worth a try.

Looks like SATA cable problem or drive controller bad. (on the drive) (CRC Error Count)

I think he tried it on the 980 not sure about the 990, it seems to work fine on win11 with nvme gen 4. Might be worth a go to see if it makes any difference with your 990. yep here it is

Did a quick search , seems others are experiencing the same health drop issue ...

There are multiple other articles on other sites also , but the bottom line is that it looks as though Samsung is outright refusing replacements and denying the warranty .... LOL

If that is the way they are gonna play it , replace your drive with another from another company with better ethics, when the new drive is installed , take a hammer to the Samsung and never buy another thing from them.
