scam attacks from lamishmophity.co.in and how I finally got rid of it

Shame on me.

After clicking on a PDF download link from this site, I started getting popup alarms about viruses, etc in my main window's sidebar. The popups wanted me to buy either Norton or McAfee security software. As soon as I would close 1 popup, another one appeared, endlessly. I tried to scan my system with my BitDefender Total Security, but this was deleted from my system.

After I reinstalled BitDefender software, registered it on their website, enabled all the protections, I did a scan. No infections, nada. And this infection survived several shutdowns and restarts. I checked Firefox and EDGE browser settings, (I don't use Google Chrome.) As a last resort, I asked Claude.AI. The entire transcript sessions is attached.

A scan with MalwareBytes free download also found no infections.

FYI. I followed steps 1-3, and then I got ride of the popups. I also changed my user account from ADMINISTRATOR to STANDARD.

Lessons learned, I hope.

I think I have blocked popups from this website in both Firefox and EDGE, but the popups continue. What do you advise?

This sounds like a browser hijacker or adware infection — these are notoriously sneaky because they survive at a level below what standard AV scans catch, and they can survive browser popup blockers because they're injecting at the browser or Windows notification level, not just as popups.

Here's what I'd work through in order:

1. Check Windows Notification Settings (most likely culprit)

This is the #1 trick these sites use — they get you to allow browser notifications (not popups), which bypass popup blockers entirely.

• In Edge: Settings → Notifications → look for lamishmophity.co.in and remove it
• In Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Notifications → Settings → find and remove it
• Also check Windows itself: Settings → System → Notifications → scroll down and look for Edge or Firefox entries showing unusual notification sources

2. Run Malwarebytes (free tier is sufficient)

Bitdefender is excellent for traditional viruses but Malwarebytes specifically targets adware, PUPs (potentially unwanted programs), and browser hijackers. Run a full scan. These two tools complement each other and won't conflict for a one-time scan. Download only from malwarebytes.com directly.

3. Check Browser Extensions

Hijackers commonly install as extensions.

• Edge: edge://extensions
• Firefox: about:addons

Remove anything you don't recognize or didn't deliberately install.

4. Check Installed Programs

Go to Settings → Apps → Installed Apps, sort by install date, and look for anything installed around the time this started. Uninstall anything suspicious.

5. Check Scheduled Tasks

These things often plant a scheduled task to reinstall themselves. Open Task Scheduler and look through the Task Scheduler Library for anything with an unusual name or that runs a script from a temp folder or AppData path.

6. Reset Browser Settings

If the above doesn't fully clear it:

• Edge: Settings → Reset Settings → Restore settings to default
• Firefox: Help → More Troubleshooting Information → Refresh Firefox

The Bitdefender deletion is serious. A program that can uninstall security software has elevated privileges somehow — either it exploited a vulnerability during installation or you (or something acting as you) approved a UAC prompt. After you've cleaned up, I'd strongly recommend checking your Windows user account to make sure no new admin accounts were created (Settings → Accounts → Other Users).

Start with steps 1 and 2 — I'd bet the Windows/browser notification settings are what's driving the continued popups.
