How does one search for a particular file using File Manager (or whatever it's called) on a Windows 11 machine? Could somebody provide me with a website that has these instructions? Preferably not a video. It would be helpful because I'm trying to help out my 72-old brother with his new laptop and I'm over 1000 miles away from him and this is his first computer with Windows 11 on it.

Thank you for your help.

    …still on a horse.
  • filename:– Searches only the file name (not content).
    • Example: filename:"project report" finds files with that exact name.
  • kind:– Filters by broad category (e.g., document, picture, music).
    • Example: kind:document or kind: picture.
  • ext: or type:– Searches for a specific file extension.
    • Example: ext:.pdf or type:docx.
  • content:– Searches for a specific word or phrase inside the file.
    • Example: content:"meeting notes".
  • size:– Filters by file size using keywords or operators.
    • Example: size:>100MB or size:huge.
  • datemodified:– Filters by when the file was last changed.
    • Example: datemodified:today or datemodified:last week.

Boolean and Wildcard Syntax

You can combine terms to refine your search further:

  • AND / OR / NOT:Must be capitalized.
    • Example: report NOT draft finds files containing "report" but excludes those with "draft".
  • Wildcards ( and ?):*
    • * matches any number of characters (e.g., data*.xlsx finds "data2025.xlsx" and "data_final.xlsx").
    • ? matches a single character (e.g., file?.txt finds "file1.txt" but not "file10.txt").

Step-by-Step for Complex Searches

  1. Open File Explorer (Win + E) and navigate to the folder or drive you want to search.
  2. Combine filtersfor precision.
    • Example: To find a PDF from last month larger than 5MB with "tax" in the name:
      filename:tax ext:.pdf size:>5MB datemodified:last month.
  3. Use Quotes for exact phrases to prevent the search from splitting the words.
You can also exclude files like compressed backup files -folder:"Backups\*"

Looks simple, I use File Locator Pro Lite and before that it was Agent Ransack but funny thing, whenever I saw Agent Ransack in my programs I could not remember what it was so I was happy when it became File Locator Pro

I've tried / used a number of search apps over the years and Everything is hands down the best. I've been using and recommending it since Windows 7.

I'll third that Everything recommendation. I'll also observe that Everything really sees "EVERYTHING" and will show you stuff that even Admin-level cmd.exe or PowerShell won't show you at the command line. It's equivalent to using PSEXEC to launch a command line at the SYSTEM or TrustedInstaller level, without any of the set-up work required. I really, really, really rely on Everything to help me find stuff I'm looking for.
