I have the paid version of AVG Ultimate at about $150 for a year & it expires in a few days, but recently I read an article that the "Avast" program which is Free to users is excellent & would meet the needs for most PC users. The article also added you could use MS Defender in conjunction with Avast but it is not necessary. Good or Bad idea?

AVG Technologies is owned by Avast, which is owned by Gen Digital (aka Symantec or Norton back in the day). I wonder if there really is much difference in the core products.

That said, I use Defender and some common sense.

I use Bitdefender Total Security. (AV and firewall, and a ton of other things I don't use)

I don't use AVG but I have been buying my Antivirus Software from this place for over a decade. Legitimate keys that I have even talked to the Security company about. They have no problem with these or the website, and claimed legitimate. I did my homework.

I run Defender and Malwarebyes Premium which works well together. Luckily I was grandfathered by Malwarebytes since I had purchased a lifetime license for MWB for $25 many, many years ago.I am a strong opponent of Avast. It used to be very good but now is very intrusive and very hard to completely get rid of. So if my advise is worth anything , I'd stay away from Avast.

i pay zero to use Defender with ocassional offline scans using Malwarebytes and AdwCleaner

AVG is Avast, it is the same AV, but with a different GUI, you can just use AVG free, since you are familiar with it.
Paid version does not add much protection, you just pay for more "features" (bloatware), slowing down PC.

I'm surprised how many people who swear by Microsoft Security (Defender) feel the need to combine it with another AV!

I use Webroot and have it found it good.
Been reading recently and Microsoft Defender rates well and is free.
When my Webroot Subscription runs out, I am going to run Windows Defender and see how it goes.
Have a read of this Test antivirus software for Windows 11 - February 2026 Defender rates as good as any of the Paid ones.
Microsoft also have another tool which I currently use as a back up Microsoft Safety Scanner which you download and run.
It is a Stand Alone Program does not install anything on your system and is regularly updated.

Up until just 3 weeks ago (at time of posting), I was solely, Windows Defender. Then I updated my BIOS to the latest for my motherboard for the 2023 certificates, put a fresh cloud copy of Windows on and thought I'd try out Bitdefender again. I've used Bitdefender previously on a tablet with no issues. Unfortunately with Bitdefender, it can be expensive to renew, you have to shop around. Anyway, bought a Bitdefender Total Security 3 device licence from Amazon UK for GBP16 (USD 21.50 approx) and installed it on the desktop. Upshot is, I like it and I didn't have to pay a fortune for it, especially for a 3 device licence, plus, I'm not beholden to Bitdefender's automatic renewal buying from Amazon.

You paid way too much for this, probably via the AVG website. If you like AVG you can get a cheap, verified license key @ $7-12 U.S. from AVG - SerialCart®.

As is the case with other major AVs like Bitdefender Free Antivirus Software, which is probably better than AVG.

I've already dropped the usage of antiviruses entirely, and that's my recommendation to anyone who is moderately tech savy enough not to fall to the obvious viruses and scam. For those who aren't, an antivirus is likely the least evil.

For what I actually use, Windows Firewall is really good despite its few shortcomings. That coupled with AppLocker was the best defense, but it was removed after Windows 7 (only available in the server editions).
I'm still looking for something similar.

Windows Defender is fine for most home users. Within a company setting it's ranked pretty poorly and not frequently used as endpoint protection. WD is commonly ranked at the bottom of the barrel for 'ease to bypass' and easy to evade.

Of course, WD is designed to take over when you don't use anything else. That's what it's supposed to do, be hard to remove so you aren't without protection.
