Solved Set up external drive for restoring

Yes, you’re correct, they’re incremental. But in my experience they dont always get generated. Something to do with Restore Points in Windows, the last time I checked and fixed it. My comments are related to two folders. Unlike Hasleo & Macrium, Backup and Restore (Windows 7) will only allow those incremental images and not individual independent images on the same folder.

Yeah I never undrstood it. It’s like they created this awesome backup system and stopped a quarter of the way through. The potential was always there.

Edit: I meant on the same drive, as you probably guessed, not folder.

#1 Rule of trouble shooting - Isolate the issue. (With Windows that means keeping all of it on a drive designated to that purpose.)

I explained it to my daughter this way: "Think of Windows as one big, massive virus and your job is to keep it tame".

So I first create in the external drive a folder for Hasleo and then I do full windows 7 backups in the root directory and Hasleo ones in its folder
Also a second Hasleo folder for files backup
Will all these work fine? Then

Personally, I would keep any Windows backups made with Windows software on a completely separate and isolated drive. I wouldn't bother with partitions, I wouldn't waste my time on folders, I'd just make the Windows backup, label it, and forget about it until I needed it or wanted to update the backup. Why? A: Because I used to do such silly things and paid the price for it. This is probably why people don't bother using Windows 7 backup software. My personal experience has been that if Windows Backup can find a way to be corrupted it will jump at the chance. This is why I keep it isolated from all other software and label it "Windows Backup". Some say that you can partition the drive and use one partition for this purpose and I do not doubt it however even when the drive is partitioned there is the risk of the prospect of a system failure where everything on that drive will be lost because it is all on one physical drive regardless of how many partitions you make. Why risk it? Get another drive. They are so cheap these days compared to the days when you paid a dollar a GB.

Rarely is there any one perfect backup application to be had. Personally, I don't know of one. Hasleo does look like quite the burger, but in 2023 it turned out to be a bit of a 'nothing burger' so I never bothered with it. I've heard that they have improved considerably since then so they might be worth a go. At least these third party software backups tend to be a little more flexible if not forgiving. Admittedly, this is coming from a guy who uses more drives in his PC than there are letters in the alphabet so clearly I'm not averse to multiple drives. I like my options. User preference prevails. :-)

The Hasleo Backup Suite has changed significantly since that time... definitely worth a try.

Hasleo creates it’s own image folders. Creating a Hasleo folder yourself, for these to be, is up to you.
Again, setting a default folder is in the tutorial posted. I’d suggest you follow the tutorial if using Hasleo. Or go to their website and find their tutorial

Does Hasleo recommend putting Backup and Restore (Windows 7) folder on the same partition with the Hasleo folder?
Myself, I wouldn't risk it but that's just me. There was a time I would put B&R anywhere but I got tired of corrupted back ups.

I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.

I don’t know what Hasleo thinks about it mate. I have always done it. They’re all independent so I am not sure there could be a problem. Win 7 Backup is in protected folders. You can’t access what’s in the without UAC prompts everywhere.

Like you, I have many drives so no risk of running out of space to place one. I wont waste a whole drive for one backup though. I have B&R jobs on drives, one for each, Wind 10, just Windows. One for Win after drivers added. One after software is installed etc etc. Same for Win 11…
These backups share drives with all sorts of stuff on them.
The only time I couldn’t restore an image after all these years, was because the drive died. I’ve been lucky?

I suppose you won't know until you actually need it. I don't even honestly know if I would use Windows B&R as my first line of remedy anymore. So much MS software is prone to failure these days. It's easy to fill up one drive allocated strictly for Windows B&R. All one need do is keep it updated. You'll fill up the drive fast that way and you'll have a selection of which image you wish to restore. I used to put File History on the same drive but found out it fills up too fast for my liking so now that goes to another drive.

I actually used one after the first 24H2 attempt. I didn’t like it and thought I’d go back to Windows 11 23H2 using a B&R that had Windows 11 with just the drivers loaded. Haslao was also on that drive. Seemed to work fine, and visa versa.

That's good to know. I tested the old Win 7 B&R just recently on a PC I hardly ever use and it worked fine. Seems funny once Windows finally drops support for a thing it starts working right. lol I think I might give that Hasleo a go on my next work station build. It's going to be one hekuvva project. *Stay tuned* it could get entertaining. :cool:
