Should I be concerned about the unsupported hardware on my PC when 23H2 arrives?

I have a number of computers running Win10 that can't do default install of Win11 so got new computers for Win11, have to see the things my clients may ask about. I have Linux Mint on a Desktop and a Notebook just to keep them working. Linux does have a couple things useful for me and runs free cross-platform programs such as LibreOffice, VLC and Firefox which also can run from a Bootable LiveDVD or LiveUSB Thumb drive albeit a bit slower. As soon as I locate a suitable version of Linux will put it on an older but usable Toshiba that has Vista.

Microsoft did nothing of the sort. They fixed their update process from accidentally updating people to 23H2 before it was officially time to do so. That is all.

Actually, MS have also stopped the appraiserres trick from working too, but so far only for the Insider Canary builds.

Thats right, people with unsupported PC’s can still, until further notice, upgrade to Win 11 22H2

well i am on a unsupported machine and i got 23h2 with a edited appraiserres trick. and not on any of the build channels .

Oh.
I did not realise that non-Insiders could download the ISO file in order to do the 23H2 upgrade / clean install. Did you get the ISO using normal methods?
I still have a non-compliant computer with Windows 11 v22H2 on it so I might try updating it purely as a test. Now that I have a decent Windows 11 laptop, I haven't so much as switched on the non-compliant one for about six months.

You and I and many others with unsupported machines running a “Non `insiders” Windows 11 were able to update to 23H2 only because Microsoft made a mistake and somehow made it possible to do so. As @Bree discovered for us, Microsoft closed that loophole after they realised that the mistake was made.

The appraiserres hack wasn’t found/created so people could upgrade to 23H2, the appraiserres hack been around for a while and people with unsupported PC’s have been using it to upgrade to Windows 11. Then RUFUS made it even easier.

Denis, it was a mistake, Microsoft screwed up and people (using non insiders W11) who did an in-pace upgrade for a certain period of time (recently) were by default dealt the 23H2 version of Windows 11. @Bree can link you to his findings.

Yes, I successfully tested this first in a VM on 12th October....

It looks like MS have already put it of the update servers, ready for the launch, but not yet marked it as available for Windows Update to offer the upgrade to RTM machines. Seems that an in-place upgrade bypasses that block, finds it when checking for updates and installs it. Whether this is intentional or an oversight of the part of MS is unclear.

...then successfully again on 14th October for my unsupported System Two, an in-place upgrade of its RTM 22621 with an RTM 22621 ISO upgraded it to 23H2...

We are already 2 years after Win10 so it could be in line with the desired 18 months between new versions that was mentioned a ways back.

When Windows 10 was first introduced, Microsoft promised support for each version for 18 months. Businesses weren't comfortable upgrading every six months, however, so Enterprise and Education SKUs were offered 24 months. Now, it would seem that that wasn't even enough, as Microsoft announced today that it's being extended to 30 months.

Those links seem to be of little relevance to Win 12.

When do you think 12 will have its general release?

If I had to bet, it'd be at least a year after 11 23H2. Which hasn't been released yet (23 October, 2023).

Not directly but do tend to see what Microsoft could be up to with Win11. And makes one wonder how much attention was given about the System Requirements for Win11 until it started biting us which undoubtedly will carry into Win12. What will we do with all the Win10 computers in 2 years?

Linux.

Or MS will continue to tacitly permit installs on unsupported hardware.
