Should I even buy a Dell again

I've not found fault with any of my Dell laptops, but then I only buy their business class Latitude range.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

WOW. Lots of responses. I should have added:

I'm not a gamer and don't need a super powerful machine. The Inspiron 1500-5510 has everything I need. Got it for about $525, normally about $675.

I had a Dell many many years ago. At that time I could specify exactly what I wanted and they would build it for me. Also the customer service tech support was much better. This time with my present purchase I had to call them 3 times. Any deviation from their script (alias spending an hour repeating what I tried) ended badly.

Anyway, thanks for the input. Computer works great now. But too many tweaks. Might be a modest Asus next time, hopefully many years from now

First, let me say that I have had issues with my Dell PC and haven't been too happy with their support, so if anyone here is going to bash Dell, it will be me. But in all fairness, I wanted to see all the issues you've had so I took the time to review all your threads.

1. Bloatware - All manufacturers install bloatware.
2. Defender missing -Any computer you buy comes with a trial version of either McAfee or Norton which has to be removed before Defender works and to do so properly you need to use the McAfee or Norton removal tool, NOT just add/remove programs.
3. Bitlocker- BitLocker Encryption is enabled, by default, on all computers that support Modern Standby, ie laptops
4. Excessive used disk space. With the manufacturers installing small ssd drives, this does become a problem, but they're all doing it. What with space allotted for system restore and a large file to accomodate hibernation, a 256 gb boot drive gets used up quickly.
5. a wifi problem- Dell fixed it with a driver and bios update so good for Dell.

The thing is, the issues you posted about are not specifically common to a Dell, but exist in all brands. With the hardware and operating system getting more sophisticated, it IS daunting to anyone unfamiliar with it (and to a lot of us old folks who are familiar), but in your case, you are right there with everyone else buying computers these days. You really can not blame the brand. You would have encountered similar problems in any other brand.
I hope you've finally gotten everything worked out and I admire your persistence in sticking with it. We're here if you encounter anything else.

@Berton Per Dell Article Number: 000124701 Dell devices are not encrypted when shipped from the factory. Automatic device encryption allows Windows to encrypt the system drive automatically after you completed the setup of your system. This occurs similar to smartphones and is seamless for the user. Automatic device encryption is only enabled on systems that meet above system requirements and support Connected Standby or Modern Standby Specifications External Link. These require solid-state storage (SSD or eMMC) and nonremovable (soldered) RAM.

Per HP- BitLocker Encryption is enabled, by default, on computers that support Modern Standby. This is true regardless of the Windows 10 version (Home, Pro, etc.) is installed.

I've appreciated your help, Glass. You did some good research on my issues, but you missed some items. The wi-fi issues were two-fold. Yes, the driver update completely solved the first one. But then I lost my internet connection with the Dell only. My other devices were fine. I called Dell support amd spent almost an hour with them. They had their script, which repeated everything I tried. Meanwhile, they installed a bunch of Dell support stuff, such as Dell Data Vault, which created many more problems for me. I was unable to remove it or disable it in services (I would disable it and on reboot it would get enabled.) Eventually I found 4 DDV .exe files. I changed the .exe to .old and that allowed me to disable it in services and it removed problems I was having. Oh, the last thing they suggested on the wi-fi issue was to disconnect and then reconnect my modem and router. I was shocked that it worked. I've done that in the past, successfully, when the wi-fi was out for everything. I ended up learning a LOT about IP addresses, explaining what happened.

The loss of free disk space was getting scary. Every day it seemed I'd have 3 gb less. Someone suggested I use a freeware program that sorted my programs by size. Turns out there was a config folder taking up a LOT of space. It was restore points. It was set to use my entire drive. I reset it to about 10 gb and I immediately regained about 70 gigs of free space. Again, I learned a lot.

Your point is that these are typical computer issues, not Dell issues. I'm just not convinced these are standard everyday laptop issues. Not so many of them. I've had numerous laptops. Sorry, I've had issues here and there, but never such a multitude of them. Maybe I just got unlucky with this computer.

Right now, all is well.

Mel

You seem to be mixing up Device encryption & Bitlocker encryption. They are not the same thing.
Turn On or Off Device Encryption - ElevenForum

Where did you find that requirement for soldering?

All the best,
Denis
It's (Bitlocker) device encryption on the Home version and Bitlocker encryption on the Pro version of Windows. They both save the encryption key within your account as I understand it.

Good point. What bumfuzzles me is why they're doing it on only modern standby devices with ssd and soldered ram. I can not understand the connection. What difference does soldered ram make and almost every new device has an ssd these days, and how does having modern standby come into it? Oh well, they didn't ask me.

I'll tell you the practice that I use when buying laptops.
I try and stick with the reliable desktop motherboard manufacturers such as GIGABYTE and ASUS etc. They normally serve me very well for many years.

And of course, for desktop computers, assemble your own using motherboards from the above manufacturers. They will serve you the best for many years. If you don't wish to assemble your own, then most large computer component suppliers offer to assemble it for you at a small price if you purchase all the components from them.

I'm curious. If Bitlocker encryption is widely enabled, when does the key appear for the user? OOBE setup?
There is no key offered. A clean install of 10/11 Pro on a suitable machine will encrypt the drive, but does NOT lock it. I have seen this on a Dell laptop with its original OEM W10 Pro, on the clean install of W11 I then gave that machine, and on another Dell that I reset with its official Dell W10 factory reset ISO.

There was a lengthy thread on this earlier...

...with my contribution at post #69 here:

Bree said:
I have just clean installed W11 Pro using a USB made by the MCT on a laptop with Modern Standby. That too had bitlocker encrypted drives by default.

Oddly, at no time was I asked to save any key, nor did Control Panel say that bitlocker was turned on. The properties for C: however showed it was encrypted, and the command Manage-bde –off had Control Panel showing 'Decrypting...' for quite some time until it was done.

Actually, this PC had an OEM W10 Pro on it when I bought it, and that too was in the same state - bitlocker encrypted drives, but Control Panel still saying 'Turn on Bitlocker'.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.

This is my 5th Dell laptop in 20 years. The specs are in "My Computer" below. I've had nothing but excellent experience with Dell and Dell support over the years.

I have 32GB of memory user expandable to 64GB. I have a 1TB SSD and there is a 2nd bay where a 2nd SSD can be added.

You bring up an excellent point that I hadn't considered. Does my adding more memory and a 2nd SSD affect my extended premium warranty? I'll check and report back.
Reporting back...

The Dell Warranty Department tells me that I can open my computer myself and do upgrades but added parts will be covered under their own warranty. This is as I would expect. Dell Warranty did tell me that I could have a Dell technician do upgrades with Dell parts and I would then have total Dell Warranty coverage. This is also as I would expect.

I've now had my Dell XPS 15 9510 for 6 months with no issues whatsoever. I love this computer. It's fast and the OLED screen is absolutely stunning.
