Should I go from Win-7 To Win-11 ?


Microsoft as a company does not make any real profits from the supply of windows to home users, it is better to give free access to upgrades to keep the OS in the forefront. They make their profits from business customers - who of course have a potential workforce ready trained in windows operations from the use at home

Bill hasn't had any say in how MS runs for years now, he's retired to concentrate on 'philanthropy'.

But under the new skin the kernel of Windows 11 is basically the same one Windows 10 uses, there's no reason why it shouldn't be a free upgrade.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds as native boot vhdx.

Thought the same & tried a new workstation with Win-11 and first problem that I faced was Text size. Using 8 monitors, I have to sit 4 to 5 feet away so couldn't read even file & folder names. Tried fooling around with Text size & Scale with no luck. Fonts & Texts getting clipped as shown.

No but you make the best point of avoiding 11 for now
It's changing/ "beta at best" and 10 is more likely not to change weekly or monthly so a lot less pain as barman suggests using 10 atm

But on both turning off updating is best so get the pro version.

I was beyond sceptical of going to even windows 10 after that hideous mess they called 8. But honestly I like 11 way better. Looks and feel and they finally got new icons...yay, which in my opinion are still outdated looking sort of..but yeah absolutely install it. My only suggestion is just steer clear of Microsoft Edge browser. Various reasons.

It might be a lot easier, to create a situation where you don't have to be 4-5 foot away from your monitors.
Or a situation where Windows at 100% scaling wouldn't be a problem.
For example... there are quite a few TVs these days that are over 8 ft. diagonally.

And both Samsung and LG have shown TVs that are 3 times that wide.

You can get something like this... at Best Buy...


You could stand 10 foot away from this bad boy... and still be able to read everything. :cool:

I would start with Windows 11 myself. You are just locking yourself into a shorter supported timeframe if you go with 10. Since you haven't used Windows 10 at all, you won't be used to any Windows 10 things, so Windows 11 differences won't be an issue.

If you find something that you cannot stand in 11, that you cannot work around somehow, you always have the ability to downgrade to 10

I agree, if you have to get used to something new you might as well get used to 11.

The one caveat is that to downgrade a PC from 11 to 10 you'd have to do a clean install. To upgrade from 10 to 11 is free and keeps all your files, installed apps and settings.

Your Windows 11 (or even Windows 10) experience will be based on both your computing experience and your ability to accept and adjust to change. Going directly from 7 to 11 will be way different than what you are accustomed to as nothing about the interface is the same, but nothing in technology stays the same. There are a number of third party tools and a bunch of registry tweaks that can alter the GUI to make it appear more familiar but try to adjust to all the differences without using them if you possibly can.
Rely on the Windows search function. It usually takes you to where you want to go within the interface. Otherwise, this board has a searchable tutorial section that covers just about everything. It is the best all inclusive resource you will find anywhere to help you. If you get lost, the members here will be glad to help you find your way.

I did that in August 2015 - well, 7 to 10 anyway. I felt completely lost at first, then after a couple of weeks started to feel right at home. Haven't looked back since.... :wink:

Yep. We've all been there, done that, and got the t-shirts for it. Mine date back to Windows 95 and many here have ones older than that. I keep mine at the very bottom of my drawer under all my old band t-shirts. They're all very faded now, as are the memories.

I still have two working Win '95 machines. The old desktop is collecting dust now, but still runs once in a blue moon. The laptop gets more use, it can join my network whenever I get mixed networking support questions to answer.

But it's screen is failing now, so I have also got a Win '95 VM running on a Win11 host to call on when needed....

It's a no brainer. If you have never used W10 or W11, then just go for latest W11. If you work on assumption that new pc will last at least five years, that is beyond end of life of W10 - 2025 or thereabouts.

One thing is for sure, you should not be using W7 as it is not supported any more.

Hackers are getting cleverer all the time, so install latest and most secure OS. Of course, good surfing practices are important.

I would not pay attention to talk of downgrading to W10 as you cannot miss what you never had.

"Bill" is too busy trying to take over the world, to care a hoot about what OS you run or how you like it. He's not even in charge of Microsoft any more. Thank God!

Fortunately, there are other people in the world who DO care about how you relate to a new OS and have made great strides in tweaking Win-11 to make it more acceptable to the common man. Their much improved version is available on the WWW for those who care to look for it.
I have it, and in just a few minutes I can whip it into shape to look and act like something we can relate to, and work with.

Most of the tweaks and tune-up tips for Win-10 will work for Win-11. There are a few exceptions, of course.
