Should I use a standard account for every day and have a separate Admin account?


Do you use an admin and a standard account?

  • Yes, I have both

  • No, I only have an admin account

  • Other, because there's always one!

I used to do this - have a standard account I used and a separate admin account. I guess I got lazy when I started signing in with a Microsoft account so just have the one account on my own computer. When settting up for a child I used to set up two accounts with the standard one for the child. And also set up son's PC like that when he was a teenager.

I'm no expert, but your setup sounds complicated to me. I use my Admin account with MS account, and use PINs for the Admin and SUA. Easy and safe.

No, it is Windows 11, no Linux to use a standard account alongside Root. In Windows we, usually, use a local Administrator account.

    Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
I used to use a standard and admin account, but it got to be way too much extra clicking a time switching when necessary. I rate the possibility of losing everything fairly low.

I have a layered backup scheme with complete backups byweekly that are always off-line unless actually being generated. In addition, I have automated backup files on a separate disk on my main system. Finally, I have a NAS with mirrored 8TB drives that also gets automated backups. I prefer protecting the data over the inconvenience of continually switching back and forth.

Back in 1996 when I was at University, I didn't like the restricted access of Windows NT 4.0, I was accustomed to do whatever I wanted in Windows 95. I hated every time I saw the "access denied" message. Therefore I always had full administrator rights in my account on my own PC. Even in Vista and higher I disabled UAC so I didn't have to see the annoying popup to grant access. This made the computer faster too because this popup consumes valuable resources and takes several seconds to show and click on it to resume.

Admittedly, I got lazy over time too. Once every family member had their own PC I stopped using multiple log ins for the same OS. It's always a pain to keep switching back and forth.

I wondered that the other day! While using revo and seeing it listed in the programs. I don't think it could uninstall itself because part way through uninstalling it would stop functioning presumably!

I haven't tried it, but I think it would just uninstall itself without the analysis to remove traces, obviously.

I was a big fan of REVO until they began inundating me with ads. I never had this problem with the free version but once I paid for it the problems started coming as REVO started sending me notifications and when I would use it to uninstall apps it would nag me with adds. I kind of wish I had stayed with the free version.

Admittedly I haven't installed much in the way of ad blockers on this new 23H2 install. I did contact REVO about it expressing my views and explaining that I received less in the way of ads when I used their freeware. They neither confirmed or denied the matter. They merely suggested that I upgrade and give them more money. Well, that won't be happening.

The big blowoff. Which is one of the big reasons why I have to use adblockers, to begin with.

I do make sure the adblockers are disabled for sites I want to support (like this one), though.

I'm curious now :-) I assumed it just lists all installed programs, to show what is installed which also shows revo itself. Surely it would need another program (ie Windows) to uninstall Revo from the control panel list of programs.

Edit - I didn't want to try it myself so googled it, and apparently it can uninstall itself - someone else tried it.
