Slow Wake of Screen

When waking my PC from sleep by a keyboard press, the PC lights immediately with disk activity. The display, however, take about 40 seconds to wake. Seems much too long.

I'm running Windows 11 on a home-brew PC with I7-11700 CPU using the built-in Intel graphics. The PC is connected through a (BlackBox) Thunderbolt KVM to a Viewsonic VP2770 monitor via DisplayPort. My sleep times are set to 30 minutes for the PC and 10 minutes for the display.

Any ideas on why the screen wake takes so long? Thanks.

Are you sure the computer sleeps? It could hibernate. The difference is that in sleep the data remain in RAM and the computer goes in standby. When you wake it the RAM has already all the data and resumes in seconds. If you have a power shortage all data are lost. In hibernation all data are copied to hard disk and the computer switches off. When you wake it or power on, all data are copied from hard disk back to RAM and hence the delay. If the computer is hibernating and you have a power shortage you lose nothing as all data are stored on non-volatile hard disk or SSD. When you wake it, it resumes as never had stopped even if it was without power for days.

You might take a look here at Brink's windows 10 tutorial about different sleep states. I do know that in my bios, there are settings to allow or disallow the individual sleep states. Check the list of settings in your motherboard documentation.

Hi @BoulderJ

Can you take a trace with Windows Performance Recorder and share the file here (you can use Dropbox, onedriver ...etc.)

use those parameters for the slow sleep troubleshooting:

You can find a tutorial here on how to install and use the tool. it's pretty simple.

See if event viewer indicates there's a problem. Put your PC to sleep, wait a couple of minutes and then wake it up in order to get exact time stamps to work with. In search box type 'event viewer' and open the app. Click on 'system' in the left pane. (Now don't get alarmed here as the sheer number of events is mind boggling, there will be multiple events at same time, and most of it looks like Greek.) These events are broken down into levels of information, warning, error, and critical. Warnings are normal as are occasional scattered errors. What is not normal is a whole lot of errors or criticals. Those are the ones you are interested in with the time stamp of when you woke computer. When you highlight an event the information pane gives information about that event. If you don't have these error or critical events at your time stamp then event viewer won't be of any help.

But if you do see such events, it MIGHT indicate something erroneous that is going on and give you a starting point in solving your problem. There are ways to filter the event log to make it more manageable. Just do a web search for "How to use event viewer to troubleshoot" and find more info on how to use it.

Now, using the event log is not easy and I am far from an expert in untangling the complexity of it. There have been times I used the event log that I was given a sense of direction to jump really quickly, other times when it became a slow arduous process, and still others where I pulled my hair out and wanted to run over my computer with my car.
