Just finished cleaning the inside of the case of my DELL XPS8940 and when I restart the PC I'm now greeted with a PREBOOT CHECKUP screen----I've NO Dell Support software on my machine and this is the first time in the 3years of ownership I've seen this---I clean the inside of my case every 3months
I've NO idea how to stop this other than holding the ESC key when I power-up...
I've tried the following with NO success--
FN key is not sticking
Secure Boot set to AUDIT MODE
Auto OS Recovery Threshold set to OFF
Support Assist OS Recovery is UNCHECKED
BIOS Connect is UNCHECKED
How do I get rid of this....No laughing please
Presently th BIOS is back to the factory presets
FWIW-
Once booted up the PC works faultlessly
I've also re-loaded the lastest firmware version that was installed in late June-NO change and checked things like the PC battery, fan plugs....
ALSO
The folks at Dell TECH SUPPORT were of NO help as well as the Dell User Forums

Other Info
The case fan and CPU cooler were after purchase upgrades...the i7 cpu runs hot and the OE solution can best be described as marginal when CPU intensive apps are used.
ALSO added VRM and SSD passive heatsinks.
PS-
If I let the preboot check proceed it adds some 3 minutes to the boot time as it runs a bunch of tests before allowing the boot-up

I don't own a Dell, but I was curious enough to Web search on that.

No error code is displayed?

I've NO Dell Support software on my machine
You do in bios. It's called Dell Pre-boot system assessment diagnostics. A Dell runs these tests when it sees something it does not like. While not advisable you can turn it off.
To turn off Dell's pre-boot system performance check, you'll need to access the BIOS setup and disable SupportAssist OS Recovery. Here's how:

1. Access BIOS Setup Restart your computer.
  • Press F2 repeatedly as the system starts up to enter the BIOS setup.
2. Locate SupportAssist OS Recovery:
  • Navigate through the BIOS menus to find options related to SupportAssist or Diagnostics.
  • Look for "SupportAssist OS Recovery" or similar wording.
3. Disable SupportAssist OS Recovery:
  • If found, select the option and set it to "Disabled" or "Off".
  • Note that BIOS options may vary slightly depending on your system model.
4. F10 to Save and Exit:

THANKS for the input Troops-
If I let the PREBOOT CHECK run I get an error message, with a QR code, for my aftermarket CPU fan- it's been in the PC for 3-years
I tried the BIOS hack AGAIN-no change
I'm off to the store for a new PC battery and will get back to you folks when I get home

Stupid question:

Are you sure that you haven't dislodged the CPU fan power cable? That would be the obvious problem caused by cleaning the inside of the PC.

OK-
Got a fresh battery in her and re-checked both of the fan wiring(CPU and case),etc....
NO change
FWIW- I was monitoring system temperatures originally thinking I had a defective fan.....the TEMPS always looked good

I tried a quick Web search.

The XPS 8940 looks like it may have an issue with third party fans.

Did you need to do some sort of work-around when you upgraded the cooler?

The case fan and CPU cooler were after purchase upgrades...the i7 cpu runs hot and the OE solution can best be described as marginal when CPU intensive apps are used.
ALSO added VRM and SSD passive heatsinks.
PS-
I set the BIOS back to the factory presets and again NO PRECHECK screen

Is there, by chance, a cover switch that is sensing the cover is not installed? I thought those had fallen out of favor, but I see them mentioned from time to time.

For me, it's usually called a case intrusion sensor. Common on business PCs.

Those RPM numbers are not plausible. I'd blame them on HWInfo.

The fans I have get noisy above 2000 RPM or less. They're Noctua NF-P14s Redux (X6, case fans) and Phanteks T30 120 (X3, AIO cooler upgrades).

I still wonder how you persuaded the Dell to not complain about a third-party CPU fan? (Not that I'm sure that there should have been a problem.) There seems to be a fair amount of online chatter about that.
