Snip and Sketch and/or/only Snipping Tool

I use it a lot to clip and paste elsewhere. Both icons now open the same app, and it is borked. Opens a weird window that does nothing.

BTW, a popup wanted me to enter my Win version below. Winver will get it, but the text can't be copied. To replace the Snippy kids, I am trying Snagit. Snagit will copy text from anywhere and convert it and paste it as ordinary text. For example, I tried to copy the Windows ElevenForum marquis above. It managed to copy and paste this much of it, "ElevenForum". I can also edit it, Eleven PUT THIS HERE Forum in the middle.

Only issue is that it ain't cheap.

Snip and Sketch is gone from my clean Win 11 install. Snipping Tool is fine and the Settings>Accessibility>Keyboard with Use the Print screen button to open screen snipping. With this combination:
- Prt sc opens a little window for the type of screen print to be performed
- Win + prt sc take a screen image that is saved in Pictures\Screenshots

I want the old snipping tool. The new one is a hassle. The old tool created a window with the clip that could be directly saved. The new one only copies to the clipboard and a program needs to be opened the clipboard copied into that program and then saved. A couple of steps backward.

Uh, like this? (Run the app versus using the shortcut)

211.png

By default it opens the window below after you take the screenshot.

212.png

Slightly annoying issue, though, is that it doesn't bring the preview window to the foreground all the time.

And If you want to skip auto copy to clipboard, you can.

213.png

Also, in Windows 11 (22000.258) I now have a setting in Windows Settings to open the app versus giving that weird select a region thing - but it seems like you need to log out / reboot for it to take effect.

I want the old snipping tool. The new one is a hassle. The old tool created a window with the clip that could be directly saved.
Open the new one first, then you can save a snip easily.

But you can copy the old Snipping Tool from a W10 PC and use it in W11. You need a copy of snippingtool.exe from System32, and the snippingtool.exe.mui from the appropriate language sub-folder of System32, eg System32\en-US or in my case en-GB.

Place your copies in a folder anywhere you like (with the .mui in its sub-folder) then you can run either or both in W11. You can even run it from a USB.

Yes, in common with most other .exe files included by default in the Windows install the .exe is language-independent, while all lanuage-specific resources are in a separate .mui file, always held in a sub-folder of the folder containing the .exe..

Microsoft said:
  • Language-specific resource files are stored separately from the application code binary, so that a code change does not affect the resources.
  • The resources for multiple languages can be deployed in a single installation or separate installations for each language.
  • A resource is loaded and displayed according to the language of the application as set by the user.

I used the same shortcut I've been using W10 for the snipping tool... if that is what you mean.

The filepath for the shortcut is:
Code:
explorer.exe ms-screenclip:

Thanks to Bree I'm back in business with the old Snipping Tool.
I'm getting used to using the new one now. It has a couple of advantages, maximum delay is now 10 seconds instead of 5. Plus it can snip the Start menu and notification fly-outs, with the old snipping tool they would disappear as soon as you clicked on the tool to take a snip.

I used the same shortcut I've been using W10 for the snipping tool... if that is what you mean.
No, that's the shortcut for W10's Snip & Sketch, the W10 Snipping Tool is different. W11's new 'Snipping Tool' is supposed to have the best bits from both....

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October.

I want the old snipping tool. The new one is a hassle. The old tool created a window with the clip that could be directly saved. The new one only copies to the clipboard and a program needs to be opened the clipboard copied into that program and then saved. A couple of steps backward.

When you take a snip, the tool will then have a disk icon to allow you to say where you wish...

Also right clicking the item after snipping produces a "Save as" option. That said, do agree the tool is awkward to use.

Free-Shooter-screenshot-tool-for-Windows.jpg

FreeShooter is a good alternative for Store App Snipping Tool.

3 key combination (fullscreen, active window, selected area)
you can change hotkeys for there 3 combinations.

You can choose screenshot folder.

Portable use, small size (349kb without language file).

ss can be saved in different formats. (bmp, jpg, png, gif, tiff files)

and more.

You can use old Calculator, Paint, Notepad, Wordpad, Snipping Tool, StickyNotes on your Windows11 computer.

You need exe file and language file in your language (FOR EXAMPLE "en-US")

FWIW, I'm not a "I want old style" type. My career was in computers and change was a given. We accepted it and went on. Just like the old Snipping Tool better, given a choice.
