Open the new one first, then you can save a snip easily.

But you can copy the old Snipping Tool from a W10 PC and use it in W11. You need a copy of snippingtool.exe from System32, and the snippingtool.exe.mui from the appropriate language sub-folder of System32, eg System32\en-US or in my case en-GB.

Place your copies in a folder anywhere you like (with the .mui in its sub-folder) then you can run either or both in W11. You can even run it from a USB.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I'm all about the Open Source GREENSHOT.

I'm not saying you should ignore other apps that Windows offers, but I will tell anybody this should be your default capture app. That is if you capture more than once a day.

Why I prefer it is that you can stop all those annoying windows and messages all other apps do. 95% of the time when I do a screenshot it's that click and drag a rectangle type. 99% of the time I went it compressed to 80% quality as a JPG (without being asked each time) and to be dropped on my desktop (without being asked). I also want ONE button to trigger all this.

And so with screenshot I simply --

1. Hit Prnt Screen. No app visibly opens. Instead --
2. -- I get the drag and capture rectangle thing, do just that, I hear a snapshot
3. -- and it's on my desktop at 80% quality as a JPEG.

This is NOT how Greenshot defaults. But it rules because you can make it work YOUR way. Try it before you deny it, lol

OH, and if you lack a Prnt Scrn button, you can access anything here --

+ 1 for Greenshot!
I don't think I could tolerate doing 5 or 6 steps just to save a screenshot!
I wanna hit PrtScn and have the png land on the Desktop. Period!

Windows key + Shift + S does nothing for me.. It appears enough people are having an issue that it's only a matter of time before they push a fix, so I'm just gonna sit tight.

My observations on the Snipping Tool...

1) Have you turned off the Settings -> System -> Notifications -> Notifications option ? (Either for All apps, or for the Snipping Tool)?

If so, you can enable Accessibility -> Keyboard -> Use the Print screen button to open screen snipping, and you will get the pop-up when you press the <Print Screen> button to capture either a rectangle, free-form shape, window or entire screen shot. However, no matter which option you choose to capture, the controls silently disappear. I can't tell you how much time I wasted the other day, searching high & low to see where the screen shot was saved....only to discover the screen shot was only captured to the clipboard -- you then have to open an app that is capable of *PASTING* the image from the clipboard....

However, when you have the the setting for Notifications **TURNED ON** (either for all, or specifically for Snipping tool), you'll get a pop-up that says "click here" to save your screen shot. (I had to do a clean install on a spare system to learn this)...

Take home message:
1) If you want to use stock Snipping Tool "the easy way", MAKE SURE you haven't turned off Notifications & MAKE SURE you HAVE turned on the Use the Print screen button for Snipping Tool option.
2) +1 vote for Greenshot instead...

Screen Capture is such a simple front end overlay mechanism! I don't know why some apps make it so complicated.
Heck, even some browsers with screenshot feature, the exe resides in the appdata folder...
