So, it's back to front from what you'd expect by the spelling?

When I was last in Los Angeles a few years ago, I hired a car to drive to Las Vegas.
When I was signing the forms for the car, the guy behind the desk asked me; "Are you driving from Los to Las?" At least that's what my ears heard. I said "Yes".

In Spanish, there are 4 definitions, El, La, Las and Los
El is singular and masculine,
La is singular and feminine,
Los is plural and masculine,
Las is plural and feminine.

El Paso - "The Step"
La Herradura - "The Horseshoe"
Las Vegas - "The Meadows"
Los Angeles - "The Angels"

These are definite articles, not definitions

English - "The' in all cases LOL.

We think it really odd having masculine and feminine nouns.

On French - Le chat (male noun) applies to a cat even if a female cat lol.

We do sometimes feminise pronouns for treasured items like a car e.g. "she goes 0-60 in 6 seconds" but strictly the phrase should be "it goes 0-60 in 6 seconds"

Funnily enough, I do not ever really recollect a female masculinising items (except perhaps very personal items wink wink).

My son-in-law and daughter used to own an APA (American Pool Association) league, of which I am a member. Each year, APA tournaments are held in Lahs Vagas. SIL and daughter were required to be there as League Operators.

This one pronounces it as Loss Vagas -

Edwin is correct about the Spanish articles El, La, Los, and Las. What's also good to know is that in Spanish there is no neuter; everything is either masculine or feminine.

What I wonder about is how Spanish speaking people keep track of whether something is M or F. For example, if you hit a nail with a hammer, which one is M and which is F? Or are they both the same? And if so, which one is it?

There are lots of places around the world that aren't pronounced the way they're spelt.
That's why I was told many years ago to pronounce a town or city the way the locals pronounce it.

An example that comes to mind right now is Melbourne, Australia.
The locals pronounce it Melbin or Mel-bn. Tourists tend to pronounce it as Mel-Born, which is pronouncing it as it's spelt.

Danish town Esbjerg
Locals: Ez-Be-Yer
Everybody else including most Danes - Ez-Berg (like iceBERG).

Of course locals often use slang for a place, Scotland has some great ones:
Broch
Blue Toon
Lang Toon

However the problem is that pronounciation/slang is only usually known by a person if they have actually been to such a place, so in most cases, one would not know the local pronounciation or slang.

Maybe you won't like my remark, but something is bothering me quite a while already.
For since #92 I don't understand anything about this topic.
The subject off the topic was Snipping Tools.
And that was what I was curious about to follow.
Every time when I see that there are new answers, they have to do with languages, which seems to me would be more a subject for the Chillout Room.

That's not a complaint, more a remark, but if I would do that in other topics, it would be moderated immediately as off-topic ...
