Solved Snipping Tool bug

I discovered the culprit! I usually control this PC remotely with AnyDesk from my work computer or other computer in home. AnyDesk interferes with the Snipping tool making it capture the entire screen instead of the desired window. The last tests were done locally, not from AnyDesk, so the Snipping tool worked correctly! This issue did not appear in Windows 10 with AnyDesk 6. In Windows 11 I downloaded and installed AnyDesk 7 and it looks like it works differently and affects Snipping tool. I will install and try Snagit and see if this is also affected by AnyDesk 7 and let you know.

So not an issue with Windows at all then?

I haven't used the eraser, but the new Snipping tool works OK locally or through TeamViewer. Only AnyDesk 7 is affected. It worked OK in AnyDesk 6.

I really like snipping tool, when the bugs were sorted, it works well enough for my needs and it's easier than finding and trying a 3rd party version

Ditto @The-Hive, works fine across the computers I have and those of the clients I have to work on, there's a lot to be said about commonality which could be what Microsoft is striving for.

If you copy the Snipping tool from Windows 10 and the respective mui file into the same folders in Windows 11 you can then use the good old Snipping tool in Windows 11! This too has the same bug with AnyDesk 7, but I prefer it because I am used to the old interface. The new tool has the icons at a different place and is not very convenient. After you copy the files create a shortcut on the desktop so you can easily run it. If you also prefer the old Microsoft Paint from Windows 10, you can download it from Winaero's site.

The problem is not with the Snipping Tool itself, per se, it's the editor that sucks..., whadda ya got, a couple crayons to play with!?!?!? :nope:

At least in Paint you could annotate a bit!

Update: I discovered how to restore the old Snipping Tool. Just copy the file C:\Windows\System32\SnippingTool.exe from a PC running Windows 10 (or from windows.old folder if still available) and the C:\Windows\System32\EN-US\SnippingTool.exe.mui into the respective folders in Windows 11. The problem now is that Fullscreen and Window mode are functionally same. The bug is for both the old Snipping Tool of Windows 10 and the modern Snipping Tool of Windows 11. Both ignore "Window Mode" and capture both screens side-by-side. A workaround is to select "Rectangle area mode" and then mark the whole window, but I find faster and more convenient the old "Window mode" functionality. Any ideas how to make it work appreciated.

I open the Snipping Tool, drag it to my second monitor, click on New and that monitor "goes dark" indicating it's ready for me to snip. I see no problems.

Maybe you're making the problem for yourself by trying to use Window Mode.

Why is Windows stuff so convoluted!?!?!? Open Start..., choose Snipping Tool..., choose Mode..., click New...., find an app to open it with..., open in Editor..., annotate...., click Save..., choose folder to save it to..., type in a title..., click Save..., go look for it..., send to upload................................................................, :nope:

Yep I like shareX and also obs studio
Both have lots of default settings to change for movie/ video recording but I've not used shareX as a replacement for snipping tool/...

Might be a good idea to mark your own post where you figured out it was AnyDesk7 causing the issue as "The answer" as well as the solved thing you already did, if it is available....

I suspect the culprit in AnyDesk 7 is the new feature that follows the mouse and switches automatically between the two screens. I will disable that and see if this issue is solved and report back.
