software to track what program/service is writing data to my drive

Does anyone know of a program that can track what exactly has been writing data to my SSD/c Drive?
For example in the picture above, i want to know since i turned on the PC today, what program/service is causing 42 gb+ of data to be written to my drive.

The only intensive thing i did today was running games/benchmarks (which isn't stored in the drive above), and download & installed nvidia drivers.

Task Manager & Resource Monitor isn't as helpful as i want it to be, because i don't think it tracks a closed service/program

  • Shader cache generation (especially with new drivers)
  • Windows Update or Defender scans
  • Telemetry or crash dumps
  • NVIDIA driver unpacking and install logs
  • Temporary files from benchmarking tools

Apparently ProcMon from Sysinternals can do it, but I have never used it. Maybe @dacrone might help?

Set filters:

  • Operation is WriteFile
  • Path contains C:\
  • Optional: Process Name is not System to exclude kernel writes

Could windows update/scans be running on its own without me knowing?

For Windows update, I had it set so I have to check it manually, but it's been nagging me to update to Windows 11 25H2, could that be it? I also noticed Windows automatically downloaded an older version of Nvidia drivers when I was trying install the latest one.

I'll check if I disabled all the telemetry in windows 11.

Task Manager can do that... just click on the column heading for "Disk", and it will sort usage from highest to lowest...
Click on the "Name" column heading to set Task manager back to normal.

That works for any of the column headings.

Probably. I’d imagine there are plenty of things running via Windows in the background that could contribute to data writing.

I think your original idea is better, run something to monitor. Otherwise you’re just stabbing in the dark.
Check System Informer, the post I referenced above?
