Solid State Drive for a Very Old Desktop

Hello All

3rd PC is very very old--((replacing as soon as possibly can though)) last year bought a Samsung 870 Evo Sata SSD Drive, and been using that in that older PC for a little while now. Today im wondering if sometime i should clone that PC drive to Samsung 860 Evo 1TB that i have here, and then use The Newer 870 Evo Sata SSD in My Main Desktop for Extra storage.

Or is this idea too much trouble to go thru lol, honestly i probably should've put the 870 in Mine in first place, and swapped the sorta new 860 Evo 1TB at that time.

((that PC is due for dust clean out again soon, so could do the drive switch around then if its not a bad idea))

HP OEM Power supply & Case
Windows 10 on that PC, sadly doesn't support 11, but the future newer System will for sure


I do have external docking station for Cloning purposes for Hard Drives, and Sata drives

Main Desktop PC is Windows 11 26100.2454
Right now Sata drive only used for Game storage in Main Desktop, eventually 2nd M.2 will be the new Game M.2, and Sata drive planning on being only extra Storage. Possibly My Local Music folder that i don't plan on changing that often, unless i purchase alot more of Music lol

AFAICT there is very little difference between the 860 EVO and 870 EVO performance wise. Different controllers and the layers(whatever that means). The one thing to consider is what is the Sata hardware level of the older system....Sata 1.5, Sata 3.0 or Sata 6.0? That will be the limiting performance of connected Sata drives.

Well i'll check out level of Sata on the older system, it possibly might be Sata 3.0 or Sata 6.0, but not entirely sure on that, verifys soon as i possibly can though, perhaps in a few minutes here

If it's anything slower than SATA III, it;'s not really worth running an SSD.
SATA I = 1.5Gb/s or 150MB/s
SATA II = 3Gb/s or 300MB/s
SATA III = 6Gb/s or 600MB/s

The slowest 2.5" SSD is around 550MB/s

I'm not sure that it's a 3Gbps SATA system.

It may use an A75 chipset. That offers 6Gbps SATA.

Well Samsung Magician stated was Sata-2 (3GBs) but could be reading wrong or could be the cable i used to hook up that Sata drive, not entirely sure at this point

In any case i so can't wait til afford to replace that PC with Modern Windows 11 compatible PC lol, Mini Pc, Small Form factor Desktop, anything at some point lol.

I'd configure even my old I7 10700 system, but sadly old tower doesn't fit on that desk lol, so sometime gonna try to purchase slightly smaller Micro Atx case and hopefully it all works out

Those systems originally shipped with SATA II spinning disks, so Magician is probably correct.

CrystalDiskInfo and Hardware Info will both show the connect speeds as well.

Yeah Crystaldisk info shows Sata 300

So yeah unforuately that system only running that Sata Solid state drive at half speed

Now to decide if its wise just to keep Samsung 870 Evo Sata SSD in PC 3, or swap that to using that in Windows 11 Pro Desktop, and putting in Older Samsung 860 Evo in PC 3 til can replace that PC

As hoping at Christmas to get Updated Boot M.2 for Main PC--Hopefully Western Digital SN850X, and SN850X 2TB M.2 to be used as Game M.2 in Slot M2_2, and first one in Slot M2_1. Supposely PCIe Lanes on Computer 1, is Both M2_1 and M2_2 from CPU according to Spec page on MSI Pro B650 VC WIfi

Yes do have M.2 Screw, M.2 Easy Clip also provided on motherboard--just past 2280 spot on M2_1 spot, i suppose i could move that to M2_2 spot, as i don't see one there when i looked when did last dust clean out.

I believe standoff already there (hopefully) I know it is for M2_1 as Kingston NV2 1TB is there now

Oh, well. If you're stuck at 3Gbps SATA (sometimes called SATA II), an SSD would still give you the benefit of its lower latency than an HDD.

True, think will just keep it as is in PC 3, PC 1 just will get the M.2 SSDs all set at Christmas, and maybe keep Samsung 860 Evo as extra Storage internally

randoms are the most important bit. You will probably get close to that even on your sata connection

I can confirm that SATA 6Gb/s and SATA 3Gb/s make a difference.
